Hello everyone,
I have installed IKEA Metod cabinet fronts with real wood veneer in my kitchen. Now I’m wondering how to clean these fronts properly and gently without damaging the surface or drying out the wood. I’m not referring to heavy or mechanical cleaning, but rather the daily care and removal of grease stains, fingerprints, and other common dirt.
I’m especially interested in which cleaning agents are suitable (e.g., pH-neutral products, oils, special wood cleaners), which methods you use (damp cloth, microfiber cloth, special sponges), and if there are any things to avoid (e.g., harsh chemicals, abrasive cleaners, excessive water).
Does anyone have experience or recommendations that help preserve both the durability of the wood and its appearance? Thanks in advance for tips and advice!

I don’t mean rough or mechanical cleaning, but daily care and removal of grease spots, fingerprints, and other common dirt.Hello! Great question, I recently had the same issue with my Metod fronts! My advice: always start by wiping with a soft, slightly damp microfiber cloth. This removes everyday dust and fresh stains without any trouble. For tougher dirt, I use a mild, pH-neutral wood cleaner diluted with water. Important: always avoid harsh chemicals and abrasive cleaners, as they can quickly dull the surface!
And absolutely no soaking – wood and too much water don’t mix; otherwise, it can warp or swell. So, wring out the cloth well and remove moisture quickly.
It sounds simple, but this approach has kept my fronts looking good for much longer. Good luck, you can do it! 🙂

For heavier dirt, I use a mild, pH-neutral wood cleaner diluted with water.Very well pointed out! I’d like to elaborate a bit because the surface of IKEA Metod wood veneer fronts is especially sensitive to cleaning agents.
- It is important to always test the surface for resistance to the cleaner on an inconspicuous spot before cleaning.
- Use only soft, lint-free cloths to avoid scratching.
- Ideally, use a pH-neutral cleaner diluted about 1:10 (cleaner to water).
- Never spray directly onto the wood; instead, dampen the cleaning cloth and then wipe the front.
- Afterwards, wipe again with a dry cloth to remove any residue and moisture.
I also strongly advise against alcohol-based or ammonia-containing cleaners, as they can severely damage the lacquer or veneer layer.
If you use oil- or wax-based care products at home, please note that these are not recommended for Metod fronts, as they can leave unsightly streaks over time.
Finally, a quick question: Are your wood fronts more matte or glossy lacquered? This can also affect the choice of the proper cleaning method.

One last question: Are your wood fronts finished with a matte or glossy lacquer?Thank you for the detailed information! My fronts are finished with a matte lacquer, as is common with these wood looks at IKEA. That probably explains why I sometimes feel the surface becomes a bit dull when cleaning.
Regarding moisture when wiping: How quickly should the surface ideally be dried? Is it okay to clean the fronts with a slightly damp cloth and leave them to air dry, or is it specifically recommended to dry them afterwards?
And a second question: What are your thoughts on occasional maintenance treatments? Should special care oils or waxes be applied from time to time to refresh the wood appearance, or should this be avoided altogether, especially because of the coating?
Looking forward to hearing more opinions!

Regarding moisture when wiping: How quickly should one ideally dry the surface? In general, painted, matte wood fronts should be wiped dry promptly with a dry cloth after cleaning with a damp cloth to avoid standing moisture. Prolonged moisture can cause tension in the wood veneer over time, leading to visual changes.

Should special care oils or waxes be applied occasionally to refresh the wood appearance, or is it better to avoid them entirely? For IKEA Metod fronts with wood veneer, IKEA itself does not recommend additional treatment with oil or wax because the surface is already sealed with a protective coating. Additional care products might damage the surface or leave unwanted residues.
For cleaning:
- Use only pH-neutral, mild cleaners.
- Avoid alcohol, ammonia, abrasive agents, or harsh chemicals.
- Use soft, lint-free microfiber cloths.
- Do not spray water or cleaning agents directly onto the surface.
- Wipe off any moisture immediately.
This will help maintain the fronts in their original condition and prevent damage caused by moisture or unsuitable care products.
