Hello everyone, I need your advice: How often should the screws of IKEA BILLY shelves be tightened? I have noticed that the shelves become a bit wobbly over time, even though I checked the screws multiple times during assembly. Is there a recommended maintenance interval to ensure long-term stability and safety? I’m not sure if this is necessary regularly or only with heavy use. Maybe someone here has experience or even recommendations from the manufacturer or practical knowledge. Thanks in advance!

Hey Noahbi, that’s a really important question! 🙂 I personally tighten the screws on my BILLY shelves about every 6 months because wood and fittings can settle a bit due to climate, weight, and use.

If you put a lot of weight on them or need to move the shelves occasionally, I’d suggest tightening them quarterly. That way, you can also spot any minor wear and tear early. But don’t worry, tightening is quick and easy—no special skills needed! Cheers! 😊

To explore the topic from a technical perspective: tightening the screws on BILLY shelves largely depends on usage and environmental conditions. Since BILLY shelves are made of particleboard with a veneer finish, they are susceptible to changes in humidity and temperature.

Here is my recommendation: check the screws again after about 3 to 6 months. In conditions of high humidity or fluctuating environments, the joints tolerate less stress, so retightening after 3 months can be advisable.

That’s exactly what I mean as well. Also, overtightening the screws can damage the wood, so caution is necessary when retightening.

Can you tell us how heavily the shelves are loaded and whether they are moved frequently? That would help to assess the situation more accurately.

Wow, what great posts here! 😀 I can only agree – I check my BILLY shelves about every four months. It’s really amazing how such small adjustments can maintain stability. They hold up really well!

That’s exactly the point! A slight tightening of the screws provides a real stability boost and prevents bigger damage! So just a little bit of turning the screws, and everything is good again.

I think that really motivates you not to neglect maintenance – it’s fun and gives peace of mind! 🙂

In addition to the already good discussion: IKEA does not provide official recommendations regarding the frequency of tightening screws for BILLY shelves, but the following is advisable from a safety perspective:

Shelves used regularly in living areas should be inspected at least every six months. Check for loose screws, deformations, and any gaps forming in the wood. If necessary, gently retighten screws without overtightening.

This is absolutely correct. It is better to apply slightly less pressure than too much in order not to damage the veneer.

Using felt pads or protective materials when frequently moving the furniture can also help preserve the material and the connection points.
