Hello everyone, some time ago I purchased several IKEA Besta units and now I want to enjoy them for as long as possible. As we all know, furniture with painted surfaces, sliding doors, or glass fronts can be quite delicate, so I’m especially interested in how to properly care for these pieces to keep them not only clean but also free from scratches, discoloration, or moisture damage. Are there any specific cleaning products that should definitely be avoided? And what about protection from direct sunlight or humidity? I’ve heard that the surfaces can be quite sensitive if the right care methods aren’t used. Does anyone have practical tips or experiences to share on how to preserve the quality and appearance of the BESTA furniture in the long term? Thanks in advance for your help!

Hello Parzander, thank you for your detailed question – that makes it easier to provide a precise answer! Regarding IKEA BESTA furniture care, I can share a few tips with you:

- Cleaning: It’s best to use a soft, slightly damp cloth with mild dish soap. Avoid abrasive cleaners or harsh chemicals, as they can damage the surface.

- Glass surfaces: For the glass fronts, I recommend a common glass cleaner, but use it sparingly and not too often to avoid damaging the seals.

- Sun protection: Direct sunlight should be avoided, as it can cause the surfaces to fade.

- Moisture: Make sure wet items don’t stay on the surfaces for too long, especially on the edges.

- Scratches: It’s best not to place sharp or abrasive objects directly on the furniture. For minor scratches, some special furniture polish products can help, but always test first in an inconspicuous area.

In general, caring for IKEA BESTA is similar to other veneered or lacquered furniture – proceed gently and carefully, and they will last a long time. I hope this helps!

To complement the care approach a bit more systematically, here is a brief guide for maintaining BESTA with a focus on long-lasting beauty:

1. Cleaning:
- Use a soft microfiber cloth that effectively collects dust and dirt.
- Use lukewarm water with a few drops of mild dish soap.
- Wipe the surface damp and then dry it with a dry cloth.
- Avoid cleaning agents containing alcohol, ammonia, or bleach.

2. Handling glass fronts:
- Wipe glass surfaces best with a damp, lint-free cloth.
- Use glass cleaner sparingly to prevent damage to seals.

3. Preventing scratches and damage:
- Handle drawers and doors gently and regularly check that fittings are securely fastened.
- Avoid placing sharp objects directly on surfaces without protection.

4. Protection from environmental influences:
- Direct sunlight can cause discoloration, so avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight.
- Humid rooms can affect edges, so ventilate as needed or use a dehumidifier.

5. Minor scratches can often be carefully treated with special furniture waxes or repair kits available at hardware stores.

Conclusion: With gentle cleaning routines and careful handling, IKEA BESTA furniture can be well maintained and stay beautiful for many years. Regular care without aggressive substances is essential to avoid secondary damage caused by chemical or mechanical factors.

Absolutely right, it’s best not to ruin the surfaces by using the wrong cleaning methods.

However, I think we tend to overemphasize the care needed for IKEA BESTA furniture a bit. These pieces are affordable and designed for everyday use – sure, they look nice, but we shouldn’t expect them to stay flawless like museum exhibits forever. Wear and tear will happen with use. That’s true for any surface, and usually regular dusting and gentle cleaning is enough.

IKEA itself doesn’t consider such repair kits necessary, and many customers worry too much about small imperfections. A bit of life on furniture is normal and actually adds character.

What I fully agree with is this: don't leave edges exposed to moisture and avoid harsh cleaning products – otherwise, problems can arise quickly. But honestly, putting too much effort into maintenance can drive you crazy.
