Hello everyone, I just assembled a larger Besta shelving unit from Ikea and noticed that the doors are not hanging perfectly level. The hinges are properly secured, and the fronts also seem to be mounted correctly, yet some doors are slightly crooked or don’t close perfectly. I know that Ikea furniture often has adjustment options on the hinges, but I’m having trouble getting it right. Does anyone have experience or tips on how to fix the issue when BESTA doors hang unevenly? Ideally, with advice on how to correctly adjust the hinges and what details to pay attention to so the doors close cleanly. Thanks!
It is best to readjust the screws on the hinges. Usually, there are three adjustment options: vertical, horizontal, and depth. You can first loosen the vertical screw, align the door, and then tighten it again. Then adjust the horizontal and depth screws until the door hangs evenly.
As an addition: The Ikea BESTA doors are equipped with clip hinges that actually allow for three adjustments. The following procedure is important:
- First, use the vertical adjustment to align the height of the door.
- Then, use the horizontal screw to optimize the gap between the door and the cabinet frame for even spacing.
- Finally, adjust the depth setting so the door sits flush with the cabinet, neither protruding nor recessed.
Sometimes the back panel or the cabinet frame is not perfectly flat, which can affect the door alignment—be sure to check and correct this if necessary.

At first, I also felt like the doors just wouldn’t fit right. The important thing is not to get discouraged – it can definitely be fixed. If all the hinges are properly attached, it sometimes helps to follow the adjustment sequence: first height, then lateral shift, and finally depth. I also once placed small wooden shims under the doors when the floor was uneven, which affected the door alignment as well. Good luck, you can do it!
I love Ikea furniture, but adjusting the BESTA hinges is a bit of an art! 🙂
Here’s my tip: take your time, use a good flashlight, and make small adjustments step by step. Often, you only see how the doors really sit with good lighting. Just try, fine-tune, and adjust one screw at a time. Pay special attention to clean, even gaps!
This always works great for me—keep at it, and soon you’ll have perfect doors in your BESTA unit! Good luck!!!
