anita64Hello everyone, I hope someone can help me here: Where can I buy replacement fasteners for the Ikea Billy bookshelf?
Some time ago, I bought a BILLY bookshelf, and unfortunately, the wall mounting brackets have been lost. Since I want to securely attach the shelf to the wall now, I need the exact matching set of screws and wall plugs. Unfortunately, Ikea only offers the entire bookshelf as a replacement, which I find unnecessary.
Does anyone have any ideas or experience where I can buy the original mounting hardware without having to purchase the whole piece of furniture again? I mean the official or at least compatible set, as I don’t want to just use random brackets or screws from a construction site to avoid compromising safety.
Thanks for any tips or advice!

That’s a good question, and it likely concerns many BILLY owners. Ikea currently only sells the complete shelving unit or replacement parts through their service – however, relying on the online availability of mounting hardware is somewhat limited. I recommend contacting Ikea customer service first: sometimes they have small replacement part kits that are not officially listed on the website.
Alternatively, you can try visiting an Ikea store in person and asking there – sometimes mounting sets are available on-site.
If that doesn’t work, a well-stocked hardware store is a good alternative where you can select dowels and screws according to the measurements from the Ikea manual or assembly instructions. Using frame dowels and metric screws usually works well.
Make sure to choose the appropriate length and load capacity, as the shelving needs secure mounting.
Best regards!

I recommend that you first contact Ikea customer service directly Absolutely right. I would approach it a bit more systematically and suggest the following:
Step 1: Contact Ikea customer service, preferably by phone or chat, and specifically ask for the mounting hardware for the BILLY shelf. Many customer service representatives can send replacement part kits from their warehouse, even if this isn’t listed on the website.
Step 2: Check the assembly instructions. The exact dimensions of the screws and wall plugs are usually specified there. This helps when buying replacements if Ikea really doesn’t provide anything.
Step 3: Visit a hardware store. I recommend expansion anchors (also known as wall plugs) with 6 or 8 mm (0.24 or 0.31 inches) diameter, and screws sized 5x50 mm (0.2x2 inches) or 6x60 mm (0.24x2.4 inches), depending on what the instructions specify. It’s important to consider the load-bearing capacity of the wall (drywall, concrete, etc.).
Step 4: Make sure not to use screws that are too long to avoid damaging the shelf.
If you like, I can extract the exact measurements from the instructions for you. That will save you the trouble of figuring it out yourself.
Best regards!
I completely understand that you don’t want to simply replace the original fastening materials. The same thing happened to me, and I was unsure if the screws I chose myself would actually hold securely.
A tip from my experience: don’t hesitate to ask at the Ikea store if they sell the set individually. I was lucky—the staff were very helpful and even gave me leftover parts from their stock. That was great.
Sometimes it’s also worth reaching out to Philips in Ikea forums, as they often have collected spare parts themselves. Just offer some support and see who else might be able to share materials. That would make the search easier.
Good luck and all the best!

I need exactly this matching screw and anchor set. It is important to use the original set to ensure the safety of the shelving unit.
From my research, Ikea does not publicly sell individual fastening kits, but customer service can provide them upon request.
I recommend contacting Ikea service in writing and specifying the exact type of shelving unit (BILLY) and the required parts. This increases the chances of success.
If this is not possible, I suggest the following sizes: 6 mm (¼ inch) anchors suitable for the wall type, and 5 x 50 mm (5/32 x 2 inch) screws. These specifications are taken directly from the Ikea assembly instructions and ensure a secure wall mounting.
Document the process and the version of your shelving unit to avoid any possible errors.
