ᐅ How exactly should BILLY be installed to prevent it from tipping over?

PradeoHello everyone,
I recently purchased a Billy shelf from IKEA, and it is very important to me to assemble it in a way that reliably prevents it from tipping over.
My question for you: How exactly should the BILLY shelf be installed, especially when fixing it to the wall, to ensure it does not tip over?
I have seen that wall mounting is recommended, but what are the truly important steps? Do I need to consider anything regarding wall plugs (anchors), screws, or the type of wall? And are there any specific stability tips to keep in mind when assembling the shelf components?
I look forward to your advice and experiences, as I want to set up the shelf safely and securely, especially since there are children in the house.

Hello Pradeo,
you already have a very good approach by paying attention to the wall mounting.
Here is a brief guide that should help you:
1. Choose the mounting location: Make sure the wall is stable (not drywall without reinforcement!).
2. Anchors and screws: Use heavy-duty anchors for concrete or special hollow wall anchors for drywall.
3. Drilling: Pre-drilling is important to securely attach the shelf.
4. Assemble the shelf: Follow the IKEA instructions carefully, especially ensuring the back panel is securely fitted, as it contributes to stability.
5. Wall mounting: Screw the supplied bracket into the upper shelves and then fasten it to the wall.
Common mistakes include using anchors or screws that are too small or attaching the bracket too low on the shelf. The bracket should be mounted relatively high to increase the anti-tilt safety.
Brief summary: Wall mounting is essential; otherwise, the shelf can easily tip over. 🙂

I fully agree with SUDAN and would like to add how important it is to use the right material for each type of wall.
Once, a shelf fell over because I had used standard wall plugs in a drywall (also known as plasterboard or gypsum board) – fortunately, no one was hurt.
Another tip: If the shelf is in a difficult-to-reach place, carefully check its stability again after installation. Sometimes you only realize at that point if everything is secure or not.
I really appreciate that you pay attention to safety, especially when there are children in the house. It definitely gives you peace of mind.

Hello Pradeo,
Your concern is completely understandable and should be handled very carefully if you want to ensure safety.
First, a fundamental question for you: What type of wall will you be mounting the BILLY on? Concrete, brick, drywall? This information is crucial for selecting the correct wall anchors and screws.
Here is a very detailed step-by-step guide:
1. Assemble the shelf: Make sure all connections are tight. Secure the back panel with all screws, as it significantly contributes to stability.
2. Positioning: Place the shelf against the wall where you want it.
3. Mark drill holes: Use the wall brackets on the shelf to mark the drill points on the wall.
4. Check wall / choose anchors: For concrete or brick, use universal or heavy-duty anchors; for drywall, use special cavity anchors, preferably those with a metal expansion mechanism.
5. Drilling: Use drill bits that match the anchors, drill carefully without wobbling.
6. Insert anchors: Ensure the anchors fit correctly and do not move.
7. Screw in screws: Secure the wall bracket with the screws until firmly seated, but do not distort the shelf.
8. Final check: Test with a slight tilt to make sure the bracket is holding properly.
One more tip: Avoid fastening the shelf only at the bottom or only in the middle, as this reduces tipping resistance.
Please get back to me with the type of wall, so I can give you more precise advice.

The wall is a solid brick wall, not drywall.
So, I should ideally use heavy-duty anchors, right?
Regarding the screws, IKEA provided some, but are they generally suitable for this type of brick wall? Or would it be better to get my own?
I’m also unsure whether I should attach the fixings only at the top of the shelf, or if it would be better to secure both top and bottom.
The shelf stands on laminate flooring—does that affect stability, or would I need to place something underneath?
Looking forward to more shared experiences.

you should normally attach the brackets on BILLY only at the top. The design is made so that the upper wall fixation prevents tipping. Fixing brackets at the bottom are not intended for the BILLY series and can even cause problems if the shelf needs to slightly twist.

Are the screws provided by IKEA generally suitable for a brick wall like this? The screws are usually suitable for wood or drywall, but for brick walls you should definitely use appropriate heavy-duty wall plugs together with matching screws from a hardware store. The screws provided alone are not sufficient for brick.
To summarize:
- Use heavy-duty wall plugs for brick walls
- Use screws that fit the size of the wall plugs
- Attach brackets only at the top of the shelf
- The back panel of the shelf should be fully screwed in and under tension
Laminate flooring under the shelf usually makes no difference as long as the shelf stands level.
