PLONIHello everyone,
I am currently facing the issue of wanting to buy an IKEA Besta shelving unit, but I no longer have the assembly instructions. My specific question is: Are there any tips or proven methods to correctly assemble the IKEA Besta furniture without the original instructions? I am familiar with the basic concept of the unit, but the missing instructions make it more complicated, especially due to the various screws and connectors IKEA uses.
Has anyone had experience with this, perhaps a systematic approach or certain rules to keep in mind to tackle the assembly without instructions and avoid mistakes? Or are there tips on how to best identify the individual parts?
I would appreciate any advice that could make the assembly easier!

Are there any tips or proven methods for correctly assembling the IKEA BESTA furniture without the original assembly instructions?Honestly, anyone attempting to assemble IKEA furniture without the instructions is basically playing furniture roulette. But assuming you still want to give it a try:
- First, sort all the parts and examine them carefully. IKEA often uses a system, like numbered screws.
- Then proceed logically by fitting parts together based on their shape and matching holes.
- It helps a lot to think about the structure during assembly: start with the sturdy load-bearing panels, then the shelves, and finally the doors and front panels.
In my opinion, it’s more of a gamble than a trick. IKEA’s system relies on the instructions to make everything clear and straightforward.
If someone can manage without instructions, they either know the concept inside out or have strong DIY skills.
Hello PLONI,
I’m happy to provide you with a structured guide on how to assemble the IKEA BESTA shelving unit even without the official assembly instructions:
- Step 1: Sort and identify the parts. IKEA often uses the same screws for different components in the carcasses. Look for screws with grooves and distinctive heads to assign them to their correct locations.
- Step 2: Start with the main structure. The side panels (usually larger boards with pre-installed dowels) go first. There are often holes for hinges or fittings, which indicate where certain parts should be attached.
- Step 3: Attach the back panel. This adds stability to the structure and is usually made of thinner particleboard, typically nailed or screwed in place.
- Step 4: Install the shelves. These are often secured with special connectors. Hidden drill holes or small metal brackets are common.
- Step 5: Fit the doors and front panels last. Hinges are generally standardized and mounted in clearly marked positions.
As an additional tip: IKEA provides PDF instructions for download on their website. If you don’t have a printer, you can view them on a smartphone or use them as a reference.
Make sure to check all parts carefully and assemble them methodically. There are often symmetrical elements that will help you identify the correct parts.
If you encounter any problems during assembly, feel free to describe them here, and we’ll be happy to offer more targeted assistance. Good luck!

IKEA offers PDF instructions for download on their website. This is the fastest way. Just download the assembly instructions; otherwise, it becomes unnecessarily complicated.
One more thing to add to the discussion:
In my opinion, the systematic approach is mostly just an exercise.
IKEA intends for you to use the instructions. The design is made so that it becomes truly stable and functional only when assembled according to the instructions. To be honest: without the instructions, parts can be installed incorrectly, which in the worst case can significantly compromise stability.
You could say that "cheating" without instructions tends to lead more to frustration than to a solution. So it’s better to find the original or download the digital version.
But of course, those with craftsmanship skills see the furniture as a puzzle – then it’s possible without instructions.
