Hello everyone, I’m planning to refresh some of my Ikea BESTÅ furniture by repainting the surfaces. Since these pieces usually have a smooth, melamine-coated finish, I’m wondering: Which paint colors work best with Ikea BESTÅ furniture if you want to achieve a modern yet timeless look? I’m looking for colors that harmonize well with the classic black, white, or wood finishes but can also add special accents. Additionally, I’m interested in whether there are specific types of paint that are especially suitable for these furniture items to ensure the surface remains durable and resistant. Has anyone had experience or recommendations regarding which shades and paint qualities have proven effective? Thanks in advance!

Hello FRAFO, great question! When working with Ikea BESTÅ furniture, it’s important to choose a paint that adheres well to melamine or chipboard panels and remains durable. Typically, neutral shades like various tones of gray complement the often black or white frame colors very well and create a modern look. Dark paints such as anthracite or deep blue provide attractive accents without being too overpowering. For a bolder choice, rich terracotta or a deep moss green can be used – these colors create a particularly natural and elegant feel, especially in living areas. It’s essential to select a synthetic resin or water-based acrylic paint, as these are durable and have low odor. Careful surface preparation is crucial during application, for example light sanding and the use of an adhesion primer, to ensure the best durability.

I have had excellent experiences with matte white, light gray, and teal. These colors complement the IKEA style well and look modern. No special paint is necessary; standard acrylic paints for wood work fine.

I want to provide a brief guide on how to choose and apply paint for Ikea BESTÅ furniture:

- Step 1: Lightly sand the surface (grit 180–220) to slightly roughen the smooth melamine coating.
- Step 2: Apply a primer designed for smooth surfaces to improve paint adhesion.
- Step 3: Choose the paint color – the shade greatly influences the effect: light gray or sand tones create a subtle look, while teal or mustard yellow add highlights.
- Step 4: Apply the paint in thin layers, several coats are better than one thick one. Don’t forget to sand lightly between coats!
- Step 5: A final clear coat protects against scratches and makes the surface more durable.

My tip: Avoid using very dark tones in rooms with little natural light, as this can quickly make the space feel oppressive.

I can add some technical details—especially regarding the types of paint. Ikea BESTÅ furniture is typically made from MDF or chipboard with a melamine or foil coating. This means standard wood paints often do not adhere well.

- It is important to first lightly sand the surface with fine-grit sandpaper (220+ grit) to remove or at least roughen the smooth seal.
- After that, I recommend using an adhesion primer specifically designed for plastics (e.g., a 2-component primer). This ensures a strong bond between the paint and the substrate.
- In terms of paint colors, cool tones like dove blue, light gray, and sage green work very well with the neutral furniture frames. These colors bring calmness and modern elegance to the room.
- Warm tones such as caramel or terracotta can, on the other hand, be used as accent colors in combination with white Besta to create an interesting effect.
- For the type of paint, polyurethane (PU) coatings are particularly durable, though they are somewhat more complex to apply due to drying time and potential odor.
- Alternatively, water-based acrylic paints work well for easier, low-odor application if the furniture is not subjected to heavy wear.

I am curious about which room you plan to use the furniture in? Living room, office, or perhaps kitchen? This also influences the choice of color and paint.

Thank you for the question. The main focus is on the living room, and two pieces will be placed in the home office. In the living room, I prefer subdued but not dull colors that work well with a wooden floor and light-colored walls. In the home office, it can be a bit more contrasting and perhaps a little bolder. Would you have a more specific recommendation regarding shades or types of finishes?
