Hello everyone, I’m planning to refresh some of my Ikea BESTÅ furniture by repainting the surfaces. Since these pieces usually have a smooth, melamine-coated finish, I’m wondering: Which paint colors work best with Ikea BESTÅ furniture if you want to achieve a modern yet timeless look? I’m looking for colors that harmonize well with the classic black, white, or wood finishes but can also add special accents. Additionally, I’m interested in whether there are specific types of paint that are especially suitable for these furniture items to ensure the surface remains durable and resistant. Has anyone had experience or recommendations regarding which shades and paint qualities have proven effective? Thanks in advance!

In the living room, I prefer muted but not boring colors that go well with a wooden floor and light walls. The study room can be a bit more contrasting, maybe even a little 'bolder.' Do you have any more specific recommendations for color shades or types of products?

For the living room, I recommend warm gray or sandy tones, such as "greige" (a mix of gray and beige) – this complements wooden floors and light walls harmoniously. Matte sage green or a muted teal blue are also very appealing, providing subtle accents without being too overwhelming.

For the study room, I suggest a darker anthracite or even a deep pine green, which promotes concentration while maintaining a stylish look. You can use smooth lacquered surfaces sealed with a matte clear coat to avoid distracting reflections under artificial lighting.

In terms of products, make sure the paints or coatings have good chemical and scratch resistance, as the study typically experiences more wear and tear (for example, from keyboards or folders).

If you like, I can gladly provide some product recommendations.

Wow, there is so much input here! I painted my BESTÅ furniture in a deep dark blue and am really happy with the result! It looks especially nice when you leave the interior surfaces white, creating a striking contrast. The most important thing is to have a good feel for the space and choose the right finish – I went with a matte finish to keep everything calm and elegant. Don’t hesitate to try out stronger colors, as they can create many wow moments!!

Metallic colors like copper or bronze can also be tried if you are adventurous. They work well as highlights on handle areas, but entire fronts can also look very unique this way. Important: always seal them with clear protective coatings.

Regarding paint quality, I would like to add some detailed information:

The best durability for BESTÅ furniture is achieved with two-component lacquer systems (2K paints), which form a very hard surface after curing. These paints dry more slowly and are somewhat more demanding to apply (safety and ventilation aspects!), but they offer the best protection against mechanical damage, liquids, and UV exposure. Ideal for heavily used furniture.

Alternatively, high-quality water-based acrylic paints are still a good compromise for DIY enthusiasts. Here, it is important to pay attention to good coverage and flexibility to avoid chipping or cracking.

Colors that have proven themselves over the years include smoky blues (Slate Blue), soft moss green, warm earth tones like clay or terracotta, and various shades of gray from light to dark.

Additionally, I strongly recommend protecting all painted surfaces from moisture—possibly with a water-repellent clear coat or furniture oil as a finish.

My tip: Make sure not to use colors that are too dark if your room has little natural light, otherwise everything can quickly feel oppressive.

I can only confirm that. I once painted BESTÅ fronts in too dark an anthracite color myself, and in poor lighting, the room felt much smaller and uncomfortable. If your room doesn’t get much daylight, it’s better to opt for lighter colors and matte finishes.

I have had the best experiences with matte white, light gray, and teal.

These colors are true classics that can almost always be recommended with confidence. Additionally, I would like to mention that for matte white, it is essential to use a paint with good opacity and durability to prevent scratches from becoming visible quickly. Thicker layers of paint can appear more intense visually but also carry the risk of cracking or blistering if not applied correctly.
