Hello everyone,

I am planning to buy Ikea PAX wardrobes for our family room and I am wondering: Which Ikea PAX doors are best suited for families with children? It is especially important to me that the doors are sturdy enough, easy to clean, and safe to use – specifically child-safe design to prevent finger traps or other injuries. It would also be good if the doors have no visible or hard-to-clean corners and remain stable during everyday use, as our household is quite lively.

Does anyone have experience or can compare different models regarding their suitability for families with children? I would also appreciate tips on whether certain additional features (e.g., soft-close, special handles, smooth surfaces) are particularly suitable.

Thanks in advance for your insights!

I recommend the PAX doors with soft-close function because they minimize the risk of children’s fingers getting pinched.

Smooth lacquered surfaces are easier to clean. Wood-look or mirrored finishes are less practical for children’s rooms.

This recommendation certainly makes sense, but isn’t it relatively easy to retrofit the soft-close function on PAX doors yourself? This raises the question for me whether purchasing the more expensive doors is really necessary.

Additionally, the durability of the surface should be considered. Many IKEA PAX doors with high-gloss finishes tend to scratch more easily – which is more likely to happen with children around.

In my opinion, matte and solid surfaces are the better option because they not only appear more robust but also show less wear and staining. If you are aiming for truly child-safe solutions, it’s also important to consider how easy these doors are to operate together with safety locks or handles, without causing frustration for the child.

To select the optimal PAX doors for families with children, I recommend systematically considering the following criteria:

- Door material: MDF with a melamine resin coating provides a durable and scratch-resistant surface.
- Safety: Doors with a soft-close mechanism reduce the risk of injuries from pinching.
- Cleaning: Smooth surfaces without recesses or patterns are easier and more hygienic to clean.
- Handle system: Simple, rounded handles without sharp edges or integrated grip strips are safer.
- Stability: Doors with reinforced frames better withstand frequent opening and rough handling by children.

For example, PAX doors of the "VOXTORP" type are especially suitable due to their smooth, matte fronts and soft-close feature. Likewise, the "BLYSKÄR" doors with smooth lacquered surfaces are a good option. While doors with mirrored fronts are visually appealing, they are less suitable for children because they are more prone to damage and harder to clean.

In summary, a solid, simple, matte door model with soft-close and rounded handles is the best choice for families with children.

That’s a good point. Retrofitting could actually be an option, but I’m not sure: Does IKEA officially offer compatible soft-close mechanisms for existing PAX doors, or do you have to turn to third-party suppliers?

What about the handles on VOXTORP doors? Are these more along the lines of grip rails that children have to touch, or are the handles rounded and safe for everyday use? This is crucial for us to prevent children from bumping into sharp edges or getting hurt.

For everyone interested, it would be great if someone could share their experience with cleaning the surfaces under daily use conditions.

IKEA provides soft-close dampers as accessories, which you can install on your existing PAX doors.

What about the handles for VOXTORP?

VOXTORP doors do not have traditional handles but feature integrated grip recesses along the top and bottom edges. This design eliminates protruding corners, making it safer for children and reducing the risk of injury from sharp edges.
