Hello everyone,

I recently ordered several Ikea Platsa storage units and would like to customize them with homemade handles. My goal is to make the simple and often very functional PLATSA style a bit more unique and cozy—without damaging the furniture or affecting its functionality.

I’m particularly interested in ideas and tips on which materials and methods work best for homemade, possibly even unusual, handles. How do you attach your homemade handles to PLATSA furniture so that they don’t become loose after a short time?

I’m also curious about the aesthetic aspect: In your experience, which designs and colors work best with PLATSA to avoid a cluttered look?

I’m looking forward to your creative suggestions and experiences!

Hello klaben,

I think it’s great that you want to customize your PLATSA furniture with your own handles! I felt the same way and understand how quickly you can become unsure whether DIY handles will really hold up or look good.

What helped me a lot was making the handles from leather scraps and attaching them with small screws that I could simply fasten into the existing holes. It feels very sturdy, and the leather gives the furniture a warm touch—much more inviting than the usual plastic handles.

I can only encourage you to try different materials as well, like thick ropes or wooden dowels. It’s a fun DIY project where you can learn a lot, and the furniture becomes a real eye-catcher.

How are you planning to attach them? Have you found the existing holes already, or are you thinking of drilling new ones?

Hello klaben,

to approach your request in a structured way, here is a short tutorial on DIY handles for PLATSA:

1. Material selection:
- Wooden strips, leather straps, ropes, metal pipes, or plastic. Wood works very well since it is easy to work with and visually versatile.

2. Preparation:
- PLATSA furniture usually has standardized drill holes for handles, which are great for simplifying the attachment.

3. Attachment:
- Use appropriate screws that fit through your handles and into the drill holes.
- Alternatively: self-adhesive hooks or clamps, if you prefer not to modify the holes.

4. Design:
- Pay attention to contrasts or coordinating colors, for example light wood tones with a white furniture body.
- Avoid handles that are too thick or bulky, as they can quickly become overpowering.

5. Avoiding mistakes:
- Always choose screws of the correct length. Screws that are too long can damage the back of the furniture.
- Handles must fit securely, otherwise they will lose their grip quickly.

Summary: Use existing drill holes, select materials that suit your interior, and carefully consider the attachment.

If you like, I can also provide tips for more specialized materials.

Hello klaben,

I would like to add that when choosing handmade handles, functionality should be the main focus. You should consider:

- How often will the doors be opened and closed?
- How much weight or stress will the handle need to withstand?

I have experimented with various attachment methods myself. For PLATSA furniture, screws through the original holes have proven to work best. A good idea is to secure the screws with appropriate nuts from the inside to prevent them from loosening.

In terms of design, I find plain wooden handles or rope handles very appealing, as they keep the look simple and not too busy. I have also sewn and stretched some handles made from cord – this requires a bit more effort but looks very unique.

I would recommend making and testing a few prototypes in advance to see how they feel and hold up before fitting all the furniture.

An important aspect when making custom handles for PLATSA is selecting the right screws. Many people forget that screws that are too long can damage the furniture piece on the backside. Measure the thickness of the material precisely before purchasing and choose screws with minimal excess length.

Additionally, the surface of the handles should be properly sealed, especially if they are made of wood or leather, to ensure long-lasting durability and resistance to dirt.

From personal experience: Handle designs that are subtle and not too bulky work best with the minimalist design of the PLATSA series. Handles that are too elaborate or bulky often look out of place.

My advice: A calm, harmonious design with high-quality materials often appears more elegant than very bold experiments.

Klaben,

I completely understand how challenging it can be to find the right design for DIY handles, especially if you’re not very experienced with craftsmanship. At first, I had many doubts and was even afraid of damaging the furniture.

What helped me was a combination of being willing to experiment and accepting small mistakes. I made handles from reclaimed wood and sometimes from elastic cords. The handles made from elastic cords are especially comfortable to hold and add functionality without being too bulky.

Sometimes it’s worth making one handle as a test because every material reacts differently.

How do you yourself perceive the balance between functionality and appearance in your planned handles?
