Hello everyone,

I have a fairly specific question regarding my Ikea Metod kitchen drawers: I want to retrofit existing Metod drawers, which currently do not have a soft-close mechanism, with a soft-close function. My main concerns are which components I will need exactly, how to install them efficiently and with as little effort as possible, and whether there are any special tips to avoid damaging the drawer slides or prevent jamming later on.

I’m also interested in practical experience, such as whether the Ikea original soft-close adapters are recommended or if other retrofit systems work better. Additionally, how is the load capacity of the drawers affected after such a modification? Are there any construction-related limitations for certain Metod drawers, for example related to height or depth, that I should be aware of?

If anyone has a detailed guide or practical tips on this, I would be very grateful. Thank you in advance!

Hello suko34,

I will try to answer your question as detailed and practical as possible, since I have already retrofitted several Metod drawers with soft-close.

First, important: Ikea offers so-called soft-close adapters that can simply be attached to the existing Metod telescopic slides. These adapters are not cheap, but they are optimized for perfect fit and function with the Metod system.

The installation process is roughly as follows:

- Completely remove the drawer and set it aside
- Locate the telescopic slides on the sides of the cabinet carcass
- Usually attach the soft-close adapter at the rear of the slide (depending on the model, using screws or a clip system)
- Before installation, check that the drawer and slides are clean and properly aligned, as warped slides can affect the soft-close function
- After installation, reinsert the drawer and open/close it several times to run in the damper

Important to note:

- The adapters are designed for specific slide models. Ikea uses different types of runners for Metod, so be sure to check the model number or type of the slide first
- Load capacity changes very little; the soft-close mechanism is designed to dampen even heavy drawers up to about 20 kg (44 lbs)
- With very small or especially shallow drawers, there can be mechanical limitations due to installation space

There are also third-party alternatives; they usually work similarly but are not all compatible and sometimes less durable.

One more question for you: Do your Metod drawers have full extension slides or push-to-open? This can affect which system fits best.

If you like, I can also help identify the exact adapter types if you describe your drawer types or specify which slides are installed.

Hope this helps you for now!

The installation process generally goes like this:

- Completely remove the drawer and set it aside
- Locate the telescopic runners on the sides of the cabinet carcass
- Attach the soft-close adapter usually at the back of the runner (depending on the model, using screws or a clip system)
- Before installation, check that the drawer and runner are clean and properly aligned, as bent runners can negatively affect the soft-close function
- After installation, reinsert the drawer and open/close it several times to allow the damper to settle

A few additional notes on common issues when retrofitting:

- If the runner is already slightly bent, the soft-close mechanism may stick or engage unevenly. So first straighten or, if necessary, replace the runners.
- Screws for the adapters must be tightened precisely to prevent the runners from twisting during drawer movement.
- Some users overlook that soft-close adapters are only allowed at specific positions on the runner—a wrong mounting position can impair the entire sliding action.
- If you want to adjust the drawer front height afterward, it helps to remove the front panel before installation and realign it perfectly afterward.

Additional tip: After installing the soft-close mechanism, avoid closing the drawer too quickly! Especially during initial use, the dampers need several opening and closing cycles to work optimally.

And for those with some experience using a chisel and screwdriver: metal clips for quickly snapping in adapters can be tricky—screws offer more security.

In summary:
- Inspect and, if necessary, align the runners
- Order the correct adapters (check the model)
- Securely fasten the adapters
- Break in the system by opening and closing the drawer several times

This should make retrofitting successful.

I'm also interested in experience-based insights, for example whether the IKEA-branded soft-close adapters are preferable or if other retrofit systems work better.

I can definitely understand your concerns when it comes to retrofitting soft-close mechanisms. At first, I was also unsure if using the IKEA original parts would really be that straightforward and if the effort would be worth it.

From my experience, I would say that although the original parts are more expensive, the investment really makes sense in the long run. You get precisely fitting adapters, and the durability seems to be optimized accordingly. There are no unpleasant surprises, and the increase in comfort is noticeable.

It's also perfectly fine to try alternative products—some are cheaper but often require more effort to adjust or install. I was more pragmatic and wanted to avoid the hassle of re-adjustments, so I went with the originals.

Still, I want to encourage you: if you stay calm during installation and proceed step by step, retrofitting usually works out without problems. And if something sticks or you feel uncertain, just take everything apart again and double-check.

Do you already know if your drawers ever had a soft-close function, or are they completely standard Metod models without any fittings? That could potentially affect the effort involved.

Good luck, you’ll manage!
