Ronin40Hello everyone, I am planning to place several Billy shelves in a recess, but I have noticed that they often do not align properly there. My recess is slightly uneven, causing the shelves to wobble or not sit flush against the wall. Are there any proven methods to better align Billy shelves—especially in such recesses? I am particularly interested in tips for compensating for unevenness and measures that make the shelves more stable without affecting their appearance. I look forward to your experiences and suggestions!
Hey Ronin40, you’ve picked an interesting topic! 😄 I’m familiar with the issue of Billy shelves in recesses myself. My tip: use small wooden wedges or rubber pads behind the shelves or on the back to compensate for minor unevenness. These are discreet and help keep the shelves more stable. It also helps to occasionally adjust the shelves slightly until they are perfectly level. It takes a bit of fiddling, but it’s worth it! 😉
Hello, to better align Billy shelves in recesses, I recommend precise measurements before installation to identify any irregularities in the recess walls. It is important to use spacers or washers at the contact points with the wall to compensate for unevenness. Installing with appropriate anchors and bracket fittings also increases stability. Alternatively, shelves can be reinforced with a back panel or guide rails to prevent tipping.
That’s really great, what you both have already shared! 🙂 I also had my Billy shelves placed in a slightly uneven niche and used expanding foam to fill the small gaps behind the shelf. This made the shelf rock solid and it no longer wobbles. But be careful with the foam, as it can be difficult to remove! Still, the result really impressed me. So: a little courage during installation definitely pays off! 🙂
Dear community, I support the suggestion to even out unevenness using wedges or spacers and would like to add that it can be helpful to check the position of the shelf several times with a spirit level before final fixing. In some cases, I also install small adjustable plastic feet to optimize stability on uneven floors. This has a positive effect on alignment and stability, especially when the niche is not perfectly square.

What helped me was making sure the shelf is not only level but also that the load is evenly distributed later on. Otherwise, the shelf can easily tip over with heavy books or objects. So it’s better to spend a bit more time on precise alignment.
