Hello everyone, I bought an old Malm chest of drawers from Ikea and am currently repairing some minor damages. I’m particularly interested in which materials work best for furniture repair on Malm pieces—especially when it comes to filling scratches, fixing worn edges, and repairing loose drawer fronts. Are there specific fillers, wood putties, or adhesives you would recommend? Also, what type of surface treatment is best to preserve the original appearance as closely as possible? I look forward to your experiences and tips!

If someone does not have much experience with furniture repairs: For Malm furniture, it is always recommended to start with a thorough assessment of the damage. Surface scratches can often be effectively treated with furniture wax or repair pens, while more severe damage such as broken edges or larger paint defects are best repaired using wood filler or two-component filler. Important: After filling, the area must be carefully sanded and color-matched. A little patience goes a long way here!

Wood filler often does not work well on coated surfaces. It is best to use wax or repair putty that is compatible with plastic film. Edge banding made of plastic film effectively replaces damaged edges.

For dry joints or small surface cracks, a solvent-free assembly adhesive can also be effective. It penetrates well and bonds the parts together again. Additionally, repair materials should be chosen very carefully in terms of color to ensure a consistent appearance.

A two-component polyester filler is suitable for surface imperfections, as it adheres particularly well and is easy to sand.

This is an important tip. Polyester filler effectively evens out irregularities and is harder than most standard wood fillers, which makes subsequent work more stable. However, the filler requires careful masking of adjacent films or coverings, as it can damage them.

A little patience is definitely worthwhile here!

I completely agree. At first, I didn't know much and wanted to fix it quickly, but rushing led to more rework. Thanks to everyone for the helpful tips—I’m now going to continue with wax and edge banding.

Thank you all for the helpful tips

You're welcome. Just as an additional note: If you want the repair to be as visually discreet as possible, you should consider using a matte clear coat in addition to color matching. This helps replicate the gloss level of the film and provides a nice, durable finish.
