Hello everyone,

I have owned an Ikea Brimnes bed for some time now, which unfortunately produces a continuous squeaking noise whenever it is loaded or moved. The sound seems to come especially from the connection points between the individual wooden panels and the metal fittings.

I have already tried tightening the screws, but the squeaking persists despite a thorough check. Are there any proven methods to eliminate this squeaking reliably and permanently without having to completely disassemble the bed?

Which tools or maintenance products are useful, and are there specific areas in the Brimnes construction that should be paid particular attention to in order to prevent the noises?

I would be very grateful for any tips and also information about common weak points in the Brimnes bed that can cause squeaking.

Best regards!

Hello TOFIPAR,

To fix squeaking in Ikea Brimnes beds, I recommend the following structured approach:

- Systematically check each connection screw and tighten again if necessary, as screws can loosen over time due to regular use.
- Then inspect all joint surfaces for small gaps or uneven parts that may cause friction.
- To eliminate the squeaking, it is advisable to use a dry lubricant based on silicone or talcum powder at the contact points. Oily substances are not suitable, as they can soften the wood or become sticky.
- Pay special attention to the metal fittings inside the joints, where dust often accumulates and can amplify noises.
- If squeaking continues, carefully tightening the nuts on the underside may help to ensure optimal stability.

Tools you will need: screwdriver (Phillips and flathead), one or two hex keys (Allen wrenches), and a brush or cloth for applying the lubricant.

These tips have proven effective with similar models. If you need more detailed assistance, please let me know.

Best regards

This is an important tip. Here is a more detailed explanation:

With Brimnes beds, squeaking usually occurs at several contact points, especially where the particleboard directly rests on metal fittings. These connections are often only compressed by the screws, so even slight movements cause creaking.

My recommendation:

- Remove the mattress and first inspect the horizontal beams supporting the slatted frame.
- Systematically tighten all screws, including the small ones, and check for visible damage to the threads.
- Then gently sand the contact surfaces on the wooden panels using fine sandpaper (grit 220 or finer) to smooth out any rough spots.
- After that, treat all contact points with talcum powder or a dry silicone spray. Talcum powder penetrates well into gaps and provides smooth friction without leaving marks.
- Also check the condition of the slats, since bent or stiff slats can also cause noises.

This should significantly reduce the squeaking. If you want, you can give me more detailed information about what you have already checked, so I can give you more targeted advice.

Good luck!

It’s good that you have already checked the screws. Additionally, I recommend the following:

- Often, the creaking is not just caused by loose screws, but by slight movement between the wood and metal components.
- To reduce noise, you can apply felt or foam rubber strips to the contact surfaces. This prevents direct friction between them.
- Make sure the slatted bed base does not wobble or have any play, as movements there also cause noise.
- For the Ikea Brimnes bed, it’s also worthwhile to check that all plastic or metal gliders on the bed legs are firmly in place; sometimes noises change due to contact with the floor.

This way, you can avoid the creaking continuing due to areas that might be overlooked.

I hope these tips help you.
