Hello everyone,

I recently purchased several IKEA Billy bookcases and want to securely fix them on my carpeted floor. The main issue is that the bookcases are less stable on carpet compared to a hard floor. Therefore, I’m looking for methods or techniques to securely anchor the Billy bookcases on carpet, especially on thicker carpet types.

I want the bookcases to be not only tip-resistant but also to prevent them from sliding when someone bumps into them. Ideally, the installation should not be too complicated and should not cause permanent damage to the carpet.

Does anyone have experience with special mounting methods, additional base plates, or similar solutions? Or maybe tips on commercially available products that work well? I’m also comfortable with some DIY skills, so suggestions for possible DIY solutions are welcome.

Looking forward to your detailed experiences and recommendations!

Hello James62,

First of all: Your question is very well formulated and shows that you are genuinely concerned about real safety. I think that’s important!

Billy shelves are quite lightweight and narrow, so stability on carpet is indeed an issue, especially if the carpet is thicker or plusher. My recommendation is to first securely attach the back panel of the shelf to the wall. IKEA usually provides suitable brackets for this, which you screw into the wall – these prevent tipping fundamentally.

Regarding slipping on carpets: There are special anti-slip mats that can be placed either under the feet or used as a base for the entire shelf. These mats are typically made of rubber or latex and help stabilize the shelf – they do not damage either the carpet or the floor.

If you’re handy, you could also place wooden boards (e.g. plywood, properly smoothly sanded) under the shelf, which then sit securely on the carpet. An anti-slip mat would go under the wooden board. This minimizes movement and tipping to the greatest extent.

Always remember to fix the shelf to the wall. The combination of wall fastening and anti-slip protection really makes it safe.

Best regards!

This is the key point! When it comes to stability on carpeted floors, there are actually some nuances that are often overlooked:

1. Wall Anchoring: It is important that the connection has sufficient load capacity. For this, you should use anchors suitable for the wall material (e.g., hollow wall anchors for drywall, expansion anchors for concrete). Pay attention to the correct number of fastening points, also depending on the length of the shelving unit.

2. Anti-Slip Pads: I recommend special rubber mats with high friction, available at hardware stores. Ideally, place these as a complete base under the shelf. Important: Check the pressure distribution on the carpet! Thick mats can concentrate the load on smaller areas and compress the carpet more heavily.

3. Base Plates: Optionally, you can use a sturdy, thin wooden board (e.g., 10mm (0.4 inches) plywood). This provides a larger, stable foundation. The board should be attached to the anti-slip mat, e.g., with double-sided tape, to prevent shifting.

4. Additional Fastening: For soft carpets, an extra clamp fixed to the wall can help secure the shelf, especially if the wall and shelf have uneven surfaces.

5. Caution with Self-Adhesive Products: Some adhesives leave residues or can damage carpets over time. If you want to protect the material, it’s better to choose mechanical fastenings.

Finally, an important question: Is your carpet firmly installed on the floor, or is it a carpet with an underlay? This significantly changes the fastening approach.

Could you clarify this? Then I can suggest more targeted measures.

One last important question: Is your carpet fixed directly to the floor, or is it a carpet with an underlay?

Thank you for your detailed contribution!

My carpet is glued firmly to the floor, but underneath there is a thin foam underlay that gives the floor a soft feel. So it’s not just a simple area rug but a fixed carpet with some padding.

For the fittings, I definitely plan to use wall anchors. What’s important to me is protecting the carpet surface under the shelving unit in case I want to move the shelf or replace the mats later without damaging the surface.

I’m leaning towards a combination of an anti-slip mat and a precisely cut wooden board. However, I’m not exactly sure how to best secure this on the carpet—so that the wooden board and mat don’t shift, but everything remains reversible.

If anyone has experience with double-sided tape on carpets, that would be really helpful to know.

Thanks in advance to everyone who continues to share their tips!
