Hello everyone,

Some time ago, I bought an IKEA Kallax shelf unit along with several white doors. Unfortunately, I only recently decided to expand the shelf and realized that I can’t simply reorder the original door color because they are older models.

My question is: Are there good options to purchase matching doors or replace them in the same color? I would prefer not to replace the entire shelf or use doors that differ noticeably in color. Has anyone had experience buying from IKEA aftersales, third-party suppliers, or perhaps methods for matching door colors yourself?

Thanks in advance for any tips, especially on the best way to handle color matching!

Hey, good question! 🙂

IKEA doors can sometimes be tricky because color shades may change over the years, and the surface texture can also look slightly different. Ordering directly from IKEA usually only works if the model is still in production or it’s exactly the same series.

Otherwise, there are two options: either you find a used pair of the exact same doors somewhere (for example, on local classified sites), or you take a DIY approach and have doors custom painted or stained to the right size—this way, you can effectively blend color differences.

Some people also repaint doors completely in a trendy color that still matches the original but stands out more. This creates a cool, intentional look and can really turn out great! 😉

To be honest: buying exactly matching doors is likely just a waste of time.

My view is this: either you commit to a complete solution with new fronts from current collections, or you intentionally create a design with a mix of colors and finishes.

Sometimes, perfect matching is simply impossible—and the courage to embrace visible differences (“color accents”) can actually add character to the space. So why waste energy on an impossible mission?

If you need the same doors, try IKEA customer service or the replacement parts store. Otherwise, either paint them yourself or buy new doors in the color you want. There are no other options.

That’s brilliant!

I had the same issue with an older version of the Kallax. In the end, I had doors custom-made and painted to fit by a carpenter. The result is fantastic and looks much higher quality than the original doors.

So, if you don’t mind the effort and a bit more budget, a custom paint finish (possibly matte or satin) is a great option. This way, even older color shades can be matched well or slightly improved.

One more tip: Have the paint color tested first on a sample board to avoid any surprises!

Hi Fapona,

I recommend the following approach:

1. Check the serial number or product line of your doors, which you can usually find on the back or the purchase receipt.

2. Contact IKEA customer service – they sometimes have leftover stock or can reorder doors.

3. Alternatively, you can try doors from third-party suppliers; especially for Kallax, you can often find compatible doors in various colors on Etsy or Amazon.

4. If you plan to paint yourself, make sure to use suitable primer (e.g., PTFE-free) and two-component (2K) paints to ensure long-lasting durability.

5. Consider taping the door if you’re painting only one side, to get matching edge colors.

This process takes some effort but is well worth it if the color is important to you.

Good luck!
