Hello everyone,

I am planning to assemble the Ikea Hemnes wardrobe on my own but have no previous experience building a large piece of furniture without assistance. I am mainly interested in how to best manage the assembly when working alone.

Specifically, I wonder: Which steps should be prioritized? Are there any tips to make securing the back panel or holding larger components easier without a second person? What is the best way to handle the delivery and unpacking of the many parts to avoid confusion later on?

I already have some basic DIY skills but lack an overall plan on how to organize myself efficiently and which tools or aids might be useful for assembling this model alone.

I appreciate any tips, advice, or experiences that can help build the HEMNES wardrobe as efficiently and stress-free as possible on my own!

Hello,

I would recommend unpacking and sorting all parts completely first. Then follow the instructions step by step.

For larger components, it is better to use clamps or cable ties as temporary holders. Attach the back panel last, as this significantly stabilizes the cabinet.

To achieve a reliable result when assembling the Ikea HEMNES alone, I recommend the following detailed approach:

- Preparation: Unpack the parts, check them, and arrange them in the order of the assembly instructions. Especially sort the screws and wooden dowels separately in small containers or bowls.

- Workspace: Work on a large, preferably flat surface. This makes handling the components easier.

- Step-by-step procedure:
1. Start with the side panels and the bottom panel. These should be stable enough to assemble without someone else holding them.
2. For attaching the back panel, a tip: Clamps or repurposed straps can help secure the frame while you screw in the back panel.
3. Use a cordless drill with torque control during assembly to avoid damage.

- Additional aids: To simulate a second helper, use sturdy blocks or boxes to support parts. A folded stack of towels can also serve as temporary support.

- Time management and breaks are important – focused work prevents mistakes that could cost more time later.

I would be interested to know whether you plan to assemble the cabinet in a fixed location or if it still needs to be transported? This may influence further tips.

Thank you for the detailed advice. The cabinet is going to be assembled directly in the living room, meaning at its final location. There is no plan to move it within the apartment since everything will be brought up to the third floor using the elevator.

I don’t have experience with aids like clamps and boxes yet, but it sounds very practical. I just wonder if handling and holding the side panels alone might still be quite tricky due to their weight and size?

Are there any special techniques to safely position the parts without constantly straining yourself?

Assembling a large piece of furniture like the Ikea HEMNES without assistance requires careful planning – you’ve already understood that correctly.

For handling the large parts: My tip is to start by positioning the side panels at an angle rather than holding them upright immediately. Keep them at a slant so you can attach the base and then gradually straighten the structure step by step. Ratchet straps wrapped around the frame and fixed to stable points can help with this. They can support some of the weight and effectively replace extra hands.

Also, place a non-slip surface under the parts to prevent slipping. Although this approach takes a bit more time, working calmly and stepwise without rushing is well worth it. Safety and avoiding damage should be the top priorities.

My advice: Assemble the base frame completely before attaching the side panels. Then you can fix the side panels individually. Attach the back panel last. This way, you have better control when adjusting the parts.
