Hello everyone,

I am currently planning a project using the Kallax shelving system and am particularly interested in magnetic emergency latches for the Kallax units. My question is: who among you uses magnetic emergency latches on the Kallax, and how satisfied are you with their functionality, durability, and installation? I am especially interested in real-life experiences regarding how these magnetic latches perform in everyday use — whether they really hold when quick access is needed, and if they are easy to install without damaging the Kallax. Any details about recommended installation height or compatibility with different Kallax models would also be great.

I look forward to your feedback and recommendations!

I have been using magnetic emergency locks on the Kallax for several months. They work reliably and keep the doors securely closed when shut. Installation is simple, mostly with screws. There is no damage to the Kallax if you drill carefully.

As a supplement: I recommend carefully checking which magnet strength is ideal during installation. Magnets that are too weak won’t hold well, while magnets that are too strong can be bothersome when opening. Also, make sure to fit the catches so that the doors do not warp. Additionally, it is advisable to use high-quality screws to ensure the fixture remains secure in the long term.

That’s a good point. But honestly, why use magnetic emergency locks on Kallax? Kallax is designed for simple shelving – why complicate it with magnets? Aren’t these unnecessary gimmicks that overload the practical piece of furniture? Maybe it’s better to just stick with the standard plastic clips or even no locks at all if quick access is the priority. I bet many overestimate the benefits of magnetic locks.

I would like to go into more detail here because using magnetic emergency catches on Kallax units is not just a matter of appearance or everyday convenience, but also involves several technical aspects:

1. Installation: Proper screwing is essential. It is advisable to pre-drill a pilot hole with a drill bit roughly the diameter of the screws or slightly smaller to prevent splitting the wood. For most Kallax models – especially the 42x42 cm (16.5x16.5 inches) compartments – small metal brackets work well, to which the magnets can be glued or screwed.

2. Magnet strength: Neodymium magnets are more effective here than ferrite magnets because they provide greater holding force at a smaller size. However, the weight of the door should also be considered, especially if accessories or large flaps are installed.

3. Mounting height: Many users install catches centered on the door, but with Kallax flaps at the bottom or top edge, this does not always work well. Ideally, the position should be tested first by temporarily fitting the catch.

What are your exact use cases? Are the doors often opened with one hand, used as child safety, or simply for aesthetic enhancement?

It is also important to consider the weight of the door

Very important! I once had a Kallax where I retrofitted a heavy flap. In the end, the magnetic catches simply didn’t hold. I then switched to stronger magnets and added extra hinges. That’s why, dominik40, you might still want to tell me how heavy the flaps you want to install are.

Also, you should make sure that the magnetic catches only work properly in combination with suitable strike plates, correctly aligned on both the door and the cabinet frame. Otherwise, everything will be loose.

Do you also need a child safety lock? Because these magnetic solutions are not full security locks but are more intended for decorative and light closure purposes.
