araodanHello everyone,
I am currently planning a modification of my Ikea Hemnes set and am wondering which tools are best suited for remodeling or customizing the furniture pieces. I’m particularly interested in practical tools that work well for disassembling, reinforcing, or adjusting the wooden parts. Tips on handling the various screws and fasteners Ikea uses would also be very helpful. Are there specific tools or setups you would recommend for clean and low-risk work on the Hemnes? Thanks for your experiences and suggestions!

Are there any specific tools or setups you recommend for clean and low-risk work on the Hemnes?Oh yes, the topic of modifying Ikea furniture is really interesting! 😃 I would definitely recommend a good cordless drill, preferably with multiple bits, since that gives you great flexibility. Also, make sure to have a cordless screwdriver with adjustable torque control so you don’t over-tighten the screws and damage the wood. Additionally, a set of hex keys is essential, as you’ll usually need those for the Hemnes screws.
Pliers and cutting tools can also come in handy if you want to disconnect joints. And very importantly: a file or sandpaper to smooth the edges after the modification. This way, your modification will not only be stable but also look great! Good luck and enjoy the project!
I would like to expand the question a bit: Which tools, besides typical screwdrivers and drills, are really useful when modifying Ikea Hemnes furniture, especially if you want to make more extensive changes?
Hemnes furniture is usually made of solid wood with turned legs and sometimes includes glued parts. This means that while standard Ikea hex keys will work, it’s better to use more robust tools.
Additionally, I recommend a set of wood drill bits for the drill, allowing you to carefully create new holes. A small hammer and wood chisels can also be helpful when you want to loosen glued joints. If you want to adjust the doors, use a jigsaw with a fine blade and always prioritize safety to avoid damaging the surfaces.
As a tip: Before starting any modification, consider how much weight the furniture will bear – some tools enable faster work, while others allow for higher-quality, cleaner results.

Also, small screwdrivers are often much more practical for very tiny screws than larger tools. For fastenings that you need to open frequently, a good set of high-quality hex keys (Allen wrenches) can sometimes be enough.
If you’re planning more advanced modifications, you might also want to consider a router. With it, you can neatly round edges or create recesses—of course, with proper respect for the tool and sufficient experience.

Exactly, I also want to make some adjustments to the appearance and functionality, for example, installing different handles and creating new cutouts on some doors. I’m not a professional and wonder if there are specific router bits or accessories for beginners to help avoid mistakes? Also, do you have any tips on how to prevent tear-out in the wood when working with a router on Hemnes furniture?
