Hello everyone,
I am currently planning a modification of my Ikea Hemnes set and am wondering which tools are best suited for remodeling or customizing the furniture pieces. I’m particularly interested in practical tools that work well for disassembling, reinforcing, or adjusting the wooden parts. Tips on handling the various screws and fasteners Ikea uses would also be very helpful. Are there specific tools or setups you would recommend for clean and low-risk work on the Hemnes? Thanks for your experiences and suggestions!

It’s great that you mention the router, as it’s an excellent tool – but it needs to be used correctly. For beginners, I definitely recommend a router with a depth stop and template guides (also known as pattern or template bits). This allows you to work precisely and in a controlled manner, avoiding unwanted gouges or tear-out.
To prevent tear-out:
- Always work against the rotation of the bit
- Move slowly and evenly
- Use a scrap piece of wood for test cuts beforehand
If you want to attach new handles, a small hand drill or a step drill bit is ideal for pre-drilling clean holes without splintering. Self-adhesive templates are also useful if you need to modify multiple pieces of furniture and want the drill holes to match exactly.

I bought a small toolkit for woodworking back then, and with all the templates and router bits, you can work on Hemnes parts really smoothly. Additionally, I recommend using a small clamp, which holds the individual pieces more securely and saves a lot of hand strength.
And don’t forget: always work with safety glasses and gloves. Safety comes first! Have fun remodeling – really a great project!
A note on tool selection, which is often overlooked: When modifying Ikea Hemnes furniture, it is important to maintain or even improve the original stability. Tools like an oscillating multitool are useful for preparing precise cutouts, for example, for new shelves or recesses.
Keep the following in mind when choosing tools:
- A good tape measure and a square are essential for accurate measurements.
- Use the correct bits for screws – Hemnes often uses Phillips and hex screws.
- A quality wood glue is usually part of the work if you want to reinforce joints additionally.
If you need to replace screws, pay attention to quality to ensure the new connections are durable.

Flexible drill and screwdriver extensions are also useful for reaching difficult spots. If the Hemnes furniture is painted, get plastic wedges or similar spacing aids to prevent damaging the finish when disassembling.
My tip: A set with various attachments for cordless screwdrivers, wood drills, and small rotary tools gives you enough versatility for almost any renovation task.
