Hello everyone,

I have a question regarding the maintenance and care of the rollers used in Ikea Besta drawers. These rollers are essential for the smooth opening and closing of the drawers, but I have noticed that over time they start to squeak and sometimes stick. My question is: What specific maintenance do these rollers require to extend their lifespan and ensure long-lasting functionality? Are there any recommended lubricants, cleaning methods, or other tips to consider without compromising the material compatibility? I look forward to your knowledgeable experiences and advice.

The rollers on Ikea Besta drawers are usually made of plastic or a combination of plastic and metal. For maintenance, I recommend the following:

- Regular cleaning: Remove dust, hair, or dirt with a dry cloth or a small brush.
- Lubrication: Use a suitable silicone-based lubricant that does not damage plastic components. Silicone spray is standard here, as it neither attracts dust nor harms plastic.
- Avoid oils or other grease-based lubricants because they can attract dirt and damage the material.
- Occasionally check the mounting and condition of the rollers to detect wear early.

These steps help maintain the rollers' function over time without risking damage.

In addition to the maintenance mentioned by roryvin, please note the following:

- Before lubricating, thoroughly clean the rollers to avoid trapping sand or other particles.
- If the rollers are removable, it is advisable to take them off briefly for cleaning.
- Do not use household fats or oils, as they tend to attract dirt and become sticky quickly.
- After applying silicone spray, open and close the drawer several times to distribute the lubricant evenly.
- Alternatively, Teflon spray is a good option, offering similar benefits to silicone spray.

Regular maintenance every 6 to 12 months is usually sufficient, unless the rollers are subjected to exceptional strain.

I can confirm this. Silicone spray is ideal for plastic rollers. Do not use anything else.

I think that’s a good tip! I used to be afraid of damaging the parts, but occasionally removing, cleaning, and carefully lubricating them has actually eliminated the annoying grinding noise for me.

Personally, I find it helpful to plan the process when dealing with multiple drawers, for example by doing it at yearly maintenance intervals. This keeps the material flexible and maintains functionality over time.

You just shouldn’t wait too long, otherwise it becomes much more difficult once the dirt has really dried and stuck.
