Hello everyone,

I have a problem with my Kallax cabinet doors from IKEA, which started to crack and even chip along the edges after cleaning. I suspect that wiping them with a damp cloth and cleaning agent might be the cause, although I usually dry them well afterwards. Despite this, the damage is now clearly visible. Has anyone experienced this issue? Is it really the moisture attacking the material, or could other factors be involved? I would appreciate any reasonable explanation, as the doors are relatively new and I intended to maintain them, not damage them. Thank you!

Hello Daniel40,

Your suspicion that excessive moisture is causing the problem is very likely. The Kallax doors are usually made of particleboard with a thin coating. If this coating is softened or damaged by water, the particleboard underneath can swell and the edges may crack.

It is important to clean with only very damp, almost dry cloths and to dry the doors quickly and thoroughly afterward. Stronger cleaning agents or too much mechanical stress can also damage the surface of the doors.

You might find it helpful to gently smooth the affected areas with fine sandpaper and reseal them with wood varnish or sealant. In any case, moisture contact with the particleboard should be avoided.

Exactly. Use less water when mopping and dry the surface immediately. Avoid using overly harsh cleaners.

Honestly: Do you really have to treat a shelf so carefully that it must not even get damp? To me, these kinds of doors are disposable, not built to last forever. Of course, the edges will chip if you treat them like a treasure chest. This really shows how sustainable IKEA actually is.

Maybe just sand them down, repaint them yourself, or go for more durable furniture right away. If that bothers you, you might want to switch to different materials – these are definitely not solid wood doors.

I understand your criticism, but the material quality should also be assessed realistically. Kallax is an affordable system made of coated particleboard and is relatively sturdy for that.

Regarding cleaning: wiping with a damp cloth is fine, but the board absorbs moisture if the sealant is damaged or too thin in any area. Swelling is a typical issue with particleboard, which users can avoid by, for example, not allowing standing moisture on the surface. Therefore, always dry it thoroughly.

If you understand these basics, the furniture can last for quite a while.

Alternatively, you can protect the edges with clear varnish if it gets wet more often. As mentioned, this is an inexpensive product with limited properties—not solid wood, but industrially manufactured.

Regardless of the manufacturer, the main cause of peeling on Kallax doors after cleaning is usually moisture absorption by the particleboard material. Important points to note are:

1. Particleboard itself is porous and absorbs water if the protective coating is damaged.
2. Excessive moisture during cleaning causes swelling, which leads to warping and peeling.
3. It is recommended to clean with a slightly damp cloth without any cleaning agents, as chemicals can damage the coating.
4. After cleaning, immediately wipe dry with a soft, dry cloth.

Although repair is possible, it is considered a temporary solution. For long-term durability, it is advisable to treat the doors with special sealants or consider using alternative materials if frequent exposure to moisture is expected.
