ᐅ Kallax doors peeling after cleaning – wiped too wet?

Hello everyone,

I have a problem with my Kallax cabinet doors from IKEA, which started to crack and even chip along the edges after cleaning. I suspect that wiping them with a damp cloth and cleaning agent might be the cause, although I usually dry them well afterwards. Despite this, the damage is now clearly visible. Has anyone experienced this issue? Is it really the moisture attacking the material, or could other factors be involved? I would appreciate any reasonable explanation, as the doors are relatively new and I intended to maintain them, not damage them. Thank you!

The particle board itself is porous and absorbs water if the protective coating is damaged.

That is absolutely correct. In addition: Many users underestimate how fragile these surfaces are. Even when the doors are new, micro-cracks may be present in the surface, which can become larger through cleaning.

I recommend:
- Cleaning only with a well-wrung cloth
- Avoiding chemicals that can damage the laminate (e.g. alcohol or vinegar essence)
- Immediately drying the doors afterward
- If possible, sealing the edges with a clear acrylic or wood varnish

This significantly extends the lifespan.
