Hello everyone,
I recently purchased some Ikea Hemnes furniture and want to take good care of it because I really like the surfaces, which are known to have a delicate finish. My specific question is: What is the best way to clean Ikea Hemnes furniture without damaging the surface or causing unwanted discoloration? I am particularly interested in both regular maintenance and the removal of stubborn stains without harming the paint layer. Which cleaning products and methods do you recommend for this? Are there any no-go practices that should definitely be avoided? I look forward to your experiences and tips!

Thank you very much for the quick and helpful responses! To ask a bit more precisely: Are there specific furniture oils or waxes that can be used for Hemnes to protect the surface, or is this unnecessary or even harmful because of the lacquer layer? I ask because I often read that wood oils are suitable, but I’m not sure how that applies to lacquered wood.

Regarding care with oils or waxes for Ikea Hemnes furniture, you should know the following: The furniture is already delivered with an opaque lacquer coating that protects it against moisture and dirt. Therefore, additional treatment with oil or wax is usually not necessary and can even damage the surface, as these substances can accumulate on the lacquer and form a film.
If you feel the surface has become dull, I recommend using a special furniture polish designed for lacquered furniture instead of oil. These products are formulated to refresh the lacquer layer without causing damage.
So, I would advise against using oils and waxes to preserve the original appearance and not compromise the protection of the lacquer coating.

Additionally, based on experience with similar lacquered wooden furniture, some waxes and oils can leave residues that may cause problems during later cleaning and alter the appearance.
If you want to preserve the furniture over time, it is enough to dust it regularly and occasionally use a special care product designed for lacquered surfaces.
Furniture polish containing a small amount of wax, specifically made for lacquered finishes, works very well here, unlike pure oil.
You should also avoid exposing the furniture too much to direct sunlight, as this can accelerate aging of the surface.
