Annalena1017 Jul 2022 08:43Hello everyone,
I am currently considering starting a simple DIY project using Ikea Hemnes furniture, but I am a beginner in furniture modification and customization. My question is: Which DIY projects with Ikea Hemnes are especially suitable for people without prior experience in woodworking or craftsmanship?
I am mainly interested in projects that can be completed with limited effort and simple tools. Of course, I also hope that the result will be both practical and visually appealing. I look forward to your suggestions and experiences!

Good morning,
as a starter project, I recommend refurbishing Hemnes dressers, for example the Hemnes 8-drawer model.
Step 1: Thoroughly clean the furniture surface and lightly sand it to improve adhesion of paint or lacquer.
Step 2: Apply water-based chalk paint or acrylic lacquer by dipping or rolling — these are easy to work with even without a glaze.
Step 3: Replace the handles to modernize the look.
Step 4: If desired, you can also replace shelves or add interior dividers to increase functionality.
Caution: If the preparation is done incorrectly, paint may peel off, so never paint over greasy surfaces.

Last year, I refurbished a Hemnes desk by simply changing the handles, applying a new coat of paint, and painting a small back panel with an accent color – it really makes a difference and wasn’t difficult at all! Highly recommended for beginners because you quickly see the results of your work.

Shelves can also be easily customized with adhesive foil or wallpaper. This is simple, but I would advise caution: adhesive films do not adhere well to all surfaces, especially not on painted wood like with Hemnes. Removing them can damage the surface. Therefore, I recommend testing in an inconspicuous area first or, if in doubt, choosing a different method.
Hello Annalena10,
I wanted to add that converting furniture into a sofa or ottoman is also quite suitable for beginners. For example, with Hemnes benches, you can simply cut more comfortable seat cushions and either glue them on or attach them with Velcro. Small paint effects or repositioning feet can also be done without requiring many tools. You should always plan enough time for preparation, especially if you are new to this field.
