Hello everyone,

I recently bought the new replacement baskets for my old Kallax shelves, but I have a problem: the baskets get stuck when trying to slide them into the designated compartments. It feels like the dimensions have changed slightly or there are some manufacturing tolerances because they don’t fit completely, even though I don’t see any obvious dirt or damage.

Has anyone else experienced that the new replacement baskets don’t fit exactly into the old Kallax units? Is there a trick to make it easier to slide the baskets in? I want to avoid damaging the shelves in any way.

I would appreciate any advice!

Oh wow, I know exactly what you mean! The new replacement baskets for Kallax can be a bit tricky sometimes :-) But don’t worry – it’s totally fixable!

When I had this issue, I carefully sanded the edges of the baskets with very fine sandpaper to make them slightly thinner. After that, they slid in smoothly like butter!

No need to panic; it’s really not a big effort, and afterward, you’ll have perfectly fitting baskets again! Give it a try, you can do it! 🙂

That might help in the short term, but is it really the best solution? I wonder if this is more of a quality issue on Ikea’s part.

Are the dimensions of the new replacement baskets officially compatible with the old units? If they differ, sanding the edges could affect the baskets’ stability in the long run.

It might be better to first check with the manufacturer or see if there is an official product statement clarifying whether the replacement baskets are designed to fit into the old units. That should be the first step before making any modifications yourself.

Regarding the issue of "jamming replacement baskets in old Kallax units," I can recommend the following:

1. First, carefully check whether the new baskets and the old Kallax units really have identical dimensions. A caliper can be helpful here.

2. Inspect the rails and guide rails for dirt or slight deformations. Even small irregularities can cause jamming.

3. If the problem is related to dimensions: you can gently sand the contact points with fine sandpaper – apply evenly and sparingly.

4. If the baskets are metal, you can also apply some silicone spray to the rails to improve sliding.

5. If you have a drawer insert with plastic guide rails, check the fittings in the shelf to see if they might be slightly bent.

Summary: With a systematic check of dimensions, condition, and sliding ability, you can usually solve the problem without damaging any parts.

The issue is actually a known problem with the newer replacement baskets for older Kallax units. Ikea likely updated the specifications, which results in slightly larger external dimensions of the baskets. These variations in width or depth can be enough to cause noticeable resistance when sliding them in.

It’s important to note that some users report the sticking is more due to the guide hooks or track fittings, which tend to be more worn on older models. This can cause the basket to press against a corner and prevent it from fully locking into place.

My advice: if possible, measure the critical dimensions (width, height, and depth of the basket, as well as the openings for the guide hooks) very precisely and compare them with your shelf’s internal dimensions.

If the measurements are already too tight, the only real solution is to carefully modify the basket. Be sure not to remove too much material to maintain stability.

One more tip: sometimes slightly tilting the basket while inserting it helps to avoid sticking on the guides.

How do your guide hooks look exactly? Are they intact?

That’s absolutely true!

I had the same issue once – instead of pushing it straight like a perfectionist, I inserted the basket with a slight twist, and suddenly it went in much more easily. A few millimeters can sometimes make a magical difference! 😉

Also, if you slightly dampen the baskets before putting them in, they dry after insertion and fit quite well. Not exactly official, but worth a try 😉

All in all: don’t get frustrated, the Kallax is a great helper around the house, and with a little patience you’ll definitely get your replacement baskets in! 🙂
