Hello everyone, I have an IKEA Billy bookshelf with drawers, and my drawers keep sticking, so they don’t slide smoothly or sometimes don’t fully open or close. I think the problem is related to correctly adjusting the drawer slides or runners. Has anyone had experience or tips on how to properly set the drawers so they don’t stick afterward? Which screws or mechanisms are crucial for this? Are there common mistakes to avoid? I would appreciate a detailed guide or at least helpful advice so I can use the drawers in my Billy bookshelf optimally again.

I think the problem lies in properly adjusting the drawer slides or guide rails.

That’s a good initial assessment. The Billy shelves with drawers usually have extension slides with metal or plastic rollers. To prevent the drawers from sticking, you should pay attention to two things in detail:

1. First, check if all the mounting screws on the guide rails and the shelf are properly tightened and not loose. Steel sheet metal slides, in particular, tend to bend and slip if they are loosely fastened, which causes the drawers to stick.

2. Pay attention to the lateral and vertical alignment. The slides often have adjustment screws that can be slightly turned. Depending on the model, the drawer can be raised or lowered slightly—this is important so that the rollers don’t press against each other on one side.

3. A common issue is that the tracks inside are dirty or rusty. A drop of silicone oil (not WD-40!) can work wonders to reduce friction.

If you like, I can provide a step-by-step guide on how to fully remove the drawer, loosen the slides from the shelf, and then adjust the slides using suitable tools (Phillips screwdriver, possibly an Allen wrench). Where exactly does the drawer stick—at the top, bottom, or side?

Check if the rails are clean. Make sure all screws are tightened. Then you can adjust the rails slightly by moving them up or down. This usually resolves any sticking issues.

I can only confirm that. I also had a lot of frustration with my Billy drawers because they ran stiffly and almost always got stuck somewhere. After cleaning and lubricating them, they became much smoother to operate. At first, I ignored it a bit because I thought that was just how it had to be. Sometimes a small remedy like that is really worth its weight in gold.

I also noticed that the shelves often stand unevenly—even on my carpeted floor. This greatly affected how the drawers sat. If you can adjust this, check with a spirit level whether the shelf is standing straight. That helped me a lot, and I haven’t had problems with sagging or tilting drawers for a long time.

One more tip: when you pull the drawer out completely, check if the runners in the front area still move perfectly or if they’ve started to get stiff. If so, also inspect the runner stops to see if they might be slightly bent. Sometimes replacing individual runner rollers helps. Are you also facing the choice between different types of runners—with or without soft-close?

If the drawers stick, simply loosen the slides and realign them. Often the drawer is misaligned or the runner is catching, so adjust and tighten the screws. Don’t forget to use silicone oil.

If you want, I can give you a step-by-step guide

Oh yes, that would be great! My right drawer has been sticking for weeks – really annoying. I suspect the rail might have warped from the weight of my books 🙂

So, a step-by-step guide would be very welcome, especially regarding the correct adjustment of the screws and checking the drawer slides. It would be important for me to know how often you need to readjust before everything runs smoothly. And how to tell if the drawer is actually aligned properly or just appears to be?

If it helps: I have the Billy with the middle drawers (about 40cm wide (16 inches)). Maybe someone has experience specifically with this model? I’m looking forward to tips so I can finally get my drawers sliding smoothly again 🙂
