Hello everyone,
I am currently working on remodeling my kitchen and want to creatively customize the Ikea Metod cabinet fronts myself. My question is: What are the options for personalizing and creatively modifying Ikea Metod fronts so they no longer look like standard fronts? I am interested in both simple DIY solutions and more technically complex methods. Are there any experiences with painting, applying adhesive films, hand-drawing designs, or even integrating other materials? Additionally, it would be helpful if you could share tips on preparing the fronts, choosing the right materials, and ensuring durability.
Thank you in advance for your suggestions!

Why bother customizing Ikea Metod fronts yourself in a complicated way when you can buy custom fronts in this price range with a bit more budget? That’s a good point. However, my main focus is on individual design. Ready-made fronts from Ikea or third-party suppliers often look quite similar and leave little room for personal touches. Also, I’d rather upgrade my current fronts instead of buying completely new ones.

Painting: One of the most common methods. It’s important to thoroughly clean the fronts first and lightly sand them to improve adhesion. How much sanding is necessary? Is fine sandpaper sufficient, or should I use something around 120 grit?

A creative option is also covering the fronts with wallpaper scraps or textiles, which are sealed with clear varnish or a special sealant. That sounds interesting – how well do good sealants hold up if the fronts are cleaned frequently during everyday kitchen use?

How much do you need to sand the surface? Is fine sandpaper enough, or should you use something like 120 grit? For Ikea Metod fronts, I recommend sandpaper with a grit of 120-150. This creates a sufficiently rough surface for adhesion without damaging the material too much. Afterwards, dust thoroughly.

They withstand cleaning agents and frequent wiping. It’s important to apply them according to the manufacturer’s instructions and allow sufficient drying time to achieve full durability.
