Konstant4916 Sep 2021 21:37I would like to discuss how the Ikea Pax system can be effectively used as a multifunctional room divider. My thinking is that Pax, with its modular design, is ideal for visually separating spaces, for example in small apartments or open-plan layouts, without sacrificing storage space. I am especially interested in how to customize the interior layout, such as hanging rods, shelves, or drawers, to keep the wardrobe as flexible as possible while serving a variety of functions, such as room separation, storage, and display surface (for example, with exterior doors featuring mirrors or glass panels). Does anyone have experience with custom modifications or tips for stability when using Pax units freestanding as a room divider? Also, how have you handled cable management or lighting when the wardrobe is placed, for example, in the middle of a room?
I use Pax as a room divider with open shelves and closed compartments. This way, I visually separate the living room and dining area while also having storage space for books and dishes. For stability, you can secure the units with metal connectors and fix them to the ceiling. I drilled cable holes myself—it works well as long as you are careful.

Some rely solely on shelves, while others abandon all typical functions and create home libraries, cladding, or even mini-bars. Who says a room divider only has to separate spaces? Why not use it as a gallery wall, coat rack, or even a plant stand with integrated lighting? I believe this radically challenges traditional ideas of what a cabinet should be. Cable passages? Just drill through anywhere and wrap the holes creatively with copper wire. Staying flexible often means letting go of perfectionism.

Matthewt4819 Sep 2021 14:23Using Pax as a multifunctional room divider is a really interesting idea that can be effectively implemented with the modular system. From my experience, it is advisable to first measure the space accurately and create a plan to determine which functions are most important for the room divider: storage, privacy screens, open areas for decoration, or a combination of these.
- The interior fittings with adjustable shelves, clothing rails, and drawers are easily customizable, allowing for reorganization if needed.
- For stability, I always use the included anchors, especially when the unit is positioned in the middle of the room. Additional supports are helpful for wider sections.
- Cable management is usually achieved through pre-drilled holes behind the back panels, keeping cables hidden and minimizing any impact on the design.
- Lighting works really well with LED strips or spotlights mounted inside the cabinet walls or on top. However, pay attention to power supplies and ensure easy access.
If the room divider is used more extensively, for example as a home office partition, drawers and smaller compartments can neatly store stationery or technical equipment. This makes the solution particularly versatile.
