Hello Forum,

I am currently working on assembling the IKEA Metod kitchen series and have a question regarding which of the mounting screws are actually made of stainless steel.

Since corrosion resistance is very important in the kitchen, I would like to know whether IKEA uses stainless steel for the Metod mounting screws or if the material is mostly galvanized steel.

I am particularly interested in the screws used in the moist environments near the dishwasher and countertops.

Does anyone have detailed experience or even knowledge about the material composition of the Metod screws?

Thanks in advance for your information!

Hello, as far as I know, most of the assembly screws for IKEA Metod are made of galvanized steel, not stainless steel.

Only some special screws, for example those used for visible fastenings in the dishwasher, might be stainless steel.

For general assembly, they usually use coated screws for cost reasons.

Hello ARNETO,

to answer your question more precisely: IKEA mainly uses galvanized steel screws for the assembly of the Metod kitchen series. These are sufficiently protected against rust stains but are not completely rust-proof.

The screws used in specially stressed areas, such as connection strips or sink installations, are occasionally made of stainless steel.

If you want to be absolutely sure, I recommend checking the screws directly with the retailer or in the installation manual, or alternatively sourcing stainless steel screws separately.

In general, stainless steel is not the standard for the entire assembly at IKEA but is rather used for critical connection points.

Thank you, that helps me a lot. Do you know if IKEA mentions this explicitly anywhere in the product description or assembly instructions?

In the documents, I could only find information about the size and type of screw, but nothing about the material itself.

Does anyone perhaps have a tip on how to reliably identify or find out this information?

Hello everyone,

From my experience and reliable product documentation, I know that IKEA generally uses galvanized steel for the Metod series, with stainless steel only used in exceptional cases.

The material specifications for the assembly screws are rarely mentioned on the packaging or in the assembly instructions.

If you want to be absolutely sure, you can check the screw head or shaft for corrosion resistance; stainless steel usually has a characteristic silver color and no zinc coating.

Alternatively, a small test with a magnet can help, although this is not completely reliable—some stainless steels are magnetic, others are not.

If you want to order the screws separately, you should specifically ask for A2 stainless steel screws (rust-resistant, suitable for indoor applications).

Exactly, you can often tell just by looking. Galvanized screws usually have a duller gray tone due to the zinc layer.

Also, stainless steel has a smoother, slightly shinier surface and doesn’t have a metallic smell if you sniff closely 🙂

I have been assembling IKEA kitchens for years and like to replace the screws with my own stainless steel ones in damp areas. It’s low cost and gives peace of mind.
