Hello everyone,

I have several IKEA Malm furniture pieces that I would like to use in my basement, which unfortunately is somewhat damp. My main concern is the increased humidity that could cause the wood to swell and get damaged. Therefore, I am looking for proven methods and products to effectively protect Malm furniture against moisture.

I am especially interested in whether there are specific wood sealants or treatments that make the surface more resistant without significantly changing the appearance or feel of the furniture.

Do you have any recommendations for suitable products or approaches to preserve the furniture from moisture damage in the long term? If anyone has experience with Malm and moisture protection, I would greatly appreciate detailed insights.

Best regards!

Hello,

to protect Malm furniture from moisture, I recommend the following steps:

1. Pretreatment: Lightly sand the furniture surfaces first to ensure better adhesion of the sealant.

2. Sealing: Use a thin layer of clear wood preservative glaze or a wood protection product specifically designed for particleboard. Acrylic- or polyurethane-based products provide good protection.

3. Pay special attention to sealing the edges: Moisture tends to penetrate most easily here. This is especially important for Malm furniture made from fiberboard.

4. An alternative is a liquid waterproofing membrane or a water-repellent clear varnish with high vapor permeability, so the furniture is protected without becoming sealed off.

5. Regular room ventilation and the use of dehumidifiers significantly contribute to long-term protection.

Important: Avoid applying thick layers to prevent swelling caused by moisture.

If you like, I can provide specific product recommendations.

Exactly, and don’t forget to treat the edges thoroughly. They are the weak point.

I understand how frustrating it is when furniture gets damaged in a damp basement.

I once had Malm dressers in a similar space and treated them with a special wood protective oil. It was important to me that the oil penetrated deeply and didn’t leave a shiny or artificial surface. Before applying the oil, I sanded the furniture thoroughly and treated the edges extra carefully.

What helped me:

- Patience during application (several thin coats)
- Allowing enough drying time after treatment
- Regularly checking for moisture around the edges

It’s also advisable to improve basement dehumidification and ensure good air circulation. This protects not only the furniture but also the structural integrity of the room.

If you like, I’m happy to share more about my approach or help with product selection 🙂
