Hello everyone,

I recently bought a Malm bed from IKEA and would like to apply a protective varnish to make the surface more resistant to scratches and stains. My main question is: Are there special protective varnishes specifically designed for Malm furniture, meaning products that are optimally matched to the surface and material?

I’ve heard that there are different varnishes for particleboard with melamine coating, but I’m unsure whether a special product is really necessary or if regular furniture varnishes or clear coats from a hardware store are sufficient. I would appreciate any advice.

A matte clear coat from a hardware store is sufficient for Malm furniture.

Lightly sand the surface beforehand to ensure better adhesion of the finish.

Before applying, the surface must be lightly sanded (very fine sandpaper).

This is important; otherwise, the paint will not adhere properly.

There are no special paints for MALM, just use regular furniture acrylic paint.

Recommendation: Use transparent, water-based acrylic varnish for furniture – available at hardware stores.

Absolutely correct, I can only confirm that. Water-based varnish is particularly suitable because of its thin film for this kind of surface.

I’ve experienced that too – a small tip: after sanding, quickly wipe over with a damp cloth, then remove dust and apply the varnish promptly.

I would like to add that it definitely makes sense to test the paint on an inconspicuous corner.

Sometimes surfaces react differently depending on the age of the furniture or the quality of the melamine finish.

I had a similar experience; I wanted to protect my MALM shelf, used water-based varnish, and the result is good, but only after sanding.

It now feels more durable, but upon close inspection, you can see the fine coat of varnish.

Thanks for the tip!

Has anyone here had experience with matte vs. gloss paint for MALM? I’m interested to know whether the matte paint negatively affects the surface appearance or if it genuinely offers protection without noticeable changes in gloss.

I recommend matte paint if you want the surface to look as natural as possible. Gloss paint reflects more light and can quickly appear heavy or artificial.

Both options offer protection, but matte paint is more discreet. Proper sanding and clean application remain important.
