ᐅ How can I prevent Ikea Besta furniture from slipping on smooth floors?

fefipeHello everyone,
I own several Ikea Besta units and need to securely prevent them from sliding on a very smooth floor (laminate with a very smooth surface). The problem is that the furniture is quite stable, but even a slight bump or cleaning causes them to shift and twist slightly. This is especially concerning in households with children or pets.
My question to you: What effective methods or products do you use to keep Ikea Besta furniture from sliding on smooth floors?
For example, I have considered felt pads with adhesive, but I’m afraid they might not provide enough grip and could actually make sliding easier. I have also thought about anti-slip mats or special adhesive pads but I’m unsure if these might damage the floor or fix the furniture legs too firmly, making cleaning difficult.
I look forward to practical advice or experiences, ideally including assessments of the effectiveness and possible drawbacks of each solution.

In practice, rubber or silicone pads designed specifically as anti-slip pads have proven effective. These create strong adhesion through friction without damaging the floor. It is important that the material adheres well both to the floor and under the furniture feet, but can be removed later without leaving any residue.
However, I wonder: how strong should the fixation be? If the furniture can be damaged by excessive hold, for example from slight edge pressure or when shifting, caution is advised with adhesive solutions. Otherwise, a combination of anti-slip mats plus light adhesion might be the best compromise.
Has anyone had specific experience with such pads or mats, especially with Ikea Besta?

Rubber or silicone pads, sold specifically as anti-slip pads, have proven to be very effective.I completely agree – soft materials like rubber work wonders because they basically “stick” without really sticking. 😄
I once used self-adhesive anti-slip pads, and they hold fantastic for me – furniture doesn’t slip at all, yet I can still move the pieces if needed. What I learned, though, is that the pads only stick well on perfectly smooth, clean, and grease-free floors. So make sure to clean well beforehand!
Oh, and I stuck them under the furniture legs, not under the entire board. Otherwise, I’m worried it would create too much grip, and cleaning would be a hassle.
Regarding cleaning: just lift the furniture and check that no dirt or dust gets trapped, and the pads will last longer.
Of course, it’s not rocket science, but simple and hassle-free – exactly what you want! 😉
I can confirm the previous recommendations and would like to organize them a bit to offer a solid solution.
This is how I would proceed:
- First, thoroughly clean the floor; dust and grease greatly reduce adhesion.
- Then get special anti-slip pads made of rubber or silicone, cut to the height of the furniture. These usually come in small sets with a self-adhesive backing.
- Stick the pads as close to the center as possible under each furniture leg strip so the pressure is evenly distributed and the furniture does not wobble.
As an alternative or supplementary solution:
- Anti-slip mats, for example made of foam rubber, can be placed under the entire furniture base. They provide strong grip but are often more bothersome when moving the furniture.
Typical mistakes are:
- Mistaking felt glides for grip enhancers – they are intended only to protect the floor and often promote sliding instead.
- Not properly degreasing the furniture legs before sticking on the pads.
Summary:
Anti-slip pads made of rubber or silicone, a clean floor, and even placement on the furniture supports offer a good and floor-friendly method to reliably secure Besta furniture against slipping.
Fully covering the floor with mats makes cleaning and moving the furniture significantly more difficult.
