Hello everyone, I recently bought a Billy bookshelf from IKEA and now I’m facing a problem: my room has a slightly uneven wall, so the shelf doesn’t sit flush against it and looks crooked.
I want to position it as securely and visually appealing as possible. Does anyone have experience with how to properly align the BILLY bookshelf on an uneven wall? Are there any tricks or special methods to compensate for irregularities without the shelf wobbling or being unstable?
Thanks for any helpful tips!

Hello pujalo, I’m very familiar with your issue, as many older buildings have uneven walls.
First, it is important to accurately check how much the wall deviates – you can do this with a spirit level or, preferably, a long straightedge. If it’s just a small bump, you can level the shelf by adjusting the adjustable feet that IKEA provides for BILLY shelves.
However, if the wall is wavy or noticeably slanted, I recommend adjusting the back of the shelf with small washers or wooden shims before placing and securing it against the wall.
Also, you should always secure the shelf to the wall to prevent it from tipping or wobbling. Typically, the package includes anchors and screws, but depending on the type of wall (e.g., drywall, concrete, brick), different types of anchors are required.
One more tip: for a visual correction, you can attach thin strips to the side panels to visually straighten the shelf and hide the gap between the wall and the shelf.

Additionally, I recommend securely anchoring the unit to the wall with appropriate wall plugs, even if the shelving is leveled with feet. For drywall, cavity anchors are advisable, while metal plugs or chemical anchors are better suited for masonry walls.
Another option is to reinforce the back of the shelving with a thin plywood panel and fit it to the wall. This helps to better compensate for height differences.

to adjust with small washers or wooden wedges That sounds interesting. Which materials would you recommend if someone wants to make these "washers" themselves?
The wall deviation is about 2 cm (1 inch) at the highest point over approximately 2 m (6.5 feet) in length. Is there a way to place the wedges discreetly so they are not visible?
Also: Do I need to adjust the leveling feet specifically, or are they already adjustable on BILLY units anyway?

The adjustable feet on BILLY can be simply rotated underneath.

Is there a way to place the wedges discreetly?Yes, you can place the wedges on the back of the shelf, between the wall and the shelf brackets. When you fix the shelf to the wall, the wedges will be invisible behind the shelf frame. It is important to secure them well so they don’t slip.
