Hello everyone, I am planning to cut a countertop from the Ikea Metod range myself and wanted to ask for advice on the best way to do this without causing the material to chip or get damaged.
I am especially interested in:
- Which tools are best suited for particleboard with a melamine coating?
- How should I handle the edges to prevent splintering?
- Are there specific techniques or aids that make cutting more precise?
I already have a jigsaw and a circular saw but am unsure which method is actually best, especially considering the edge quality.
If anyone has experience with the Ikea Metod system and its countertops, I would be very grateful for detailed tips and possibly advice on preparation and finishing!

Let me add: If you don’t have access to a circular hand saw, a corded jigsaw with a pendulum action feature and a fine blade is also a good option. Proper guiding of the saw is essential to keep the cut straight.
Additionally, you should definitely wear safety glasses and hearing protection, as particleboard dust and saw noise can be harmful.
In summary, thorough preparation with quality tools, secure fastening, and precise guidance are key to cutting Ikea Metod countertops accurately and cleanly by yourself.

Great tips here – thanks to everyone!
I just wanted to add some encouragement: Cutting the Metod countertops is actually quite enjoyable once you get the hang of it.
A little trick from me: score the cutting line lightly with a sharp utility knife before sawing. This helped me prevent splintering!
Don’t get discouraged and just give it a try – it works better than you might expect 🙂

One small additional note: I would also recommend taking the time to align the countertop precisely and secure it well. This way, sawing not only yields better results but also goes more smoothly.
