Hello everyone,

I have a specific question regarding the hinges on the Kallax shelving unit from Ikea: Who among you prefers to replace the hinges yourself using third-party or aftermarket parts instead of the original Ikea components? I’m especially interested in how you go about it, what experiences you’ve had with different quality or fit issues, and whether you think it’s worth switching to alternative products or better to stick with the original hinges.

I’ve noticed that the original hinges can become stiff over time with frequent use or even break, and the prices for replacement parts from Ikea are quite high. That’s why I’m considering sourcing suitable hinges myself and doing the replacement.

How has your experience been? Thanks in advance for your insights and tips!

I would always use original parts. The fit and quality of Ikea hinges are better. Third-party components are usually cheaper but often have lower quality.

The topic is more complex than it initially seems. When replacing Kallax hinges with reproductions, installation precision is especially important. The original hinges are specifically designed to fit the drilling pattern and thickness of Kallax panels. If you want to install different hinges, you need to measure very carefully and may have to drill new holes to avoid misalignment.

Another important detail is the hinge system: Ikea usually uses a special single-cup hinge with a 35mm (1.4 inch) hole and fairly standardized dimensions, but the leverage forces and spring mechanisms can vary with reproductions. This can lead to doors not closing properly over time or increased wear.

Additionally, the surface coating should be considered to prevent rust or corrosion, especially in more humid areas. Original parts usually have this optimized.

I’m curious though: Do you already have specific reproduction parts in mind, or are you planning to search yourself? And do you use the doors frequently or are they in less-used areas? This could affect how durability is assessed.

Thank you for the detailed reply! At the moment, I haven’t found any specific replacement parts yet; I wanted to hear about your experiences first. The doors are used quite frequently every day since I use the Kallax for folders and other office supplies.

So I definitely don’t want the hinges to wear out too quickly or make the doors difficult to operate. That’s why I wondered if the extra cost for original hinges might be worth it, but how do the alternatives really compare?

When using non-original hinges for Kallax shelves, precise measurements should be checked: the hinge must exactly match the standard drill holes, otherwise additional adjustments will be necessary.

Original hinges are designed for durability and optimal function in connection with Kallax. Although third-party models are often cheaper, they more frequently have fit issues or less robust mechanics.

If self-installation with non-original parts is desired, I recommend choosing hinges that are specified in industrial or furniture trade as compatible with the exact standard requirements of Kallax. Technical details such as opening angle, drill hole diameter, and spring tension should be clearly available.

Ultimately, the decision depends on the required durability and frequency of use. For very frequently used doors, original hinges are generally the more reliable option.

I think anyone with a bit of DIY skill can definitely try third-party options. Sure, you have to pay attention to the measurements, that’s true. But considering the price difference, it’s worth having a bit of fun experimenting. 🙂

Also, if you realize it doesn’t fit quite right, you can just replace it. With IKEA hinges at their original price, you might hesitate to do that.

Personally, I have already replaced my Kallax hinges twice myself with affordable alternatives – and they have been holding up perfectly for months now. 😉 The key is to adjust the door properly after installation, then they work great.
