Hello everyone,

I am planning to use the IKEA KALLAX shelving system for my new project in France, but I am wondering whether the KALLAX system is fully compatible with the commonly used French dimensions.

Specifically, I am concerned about the measurements of the shelves and compartments, which are designed according to the Swedish measurement system, whereas France often follows different standard sizes, especially for interior fittings and furniture.

Has anyone had experience with whether the KALLAX modules fit smoothly into French room layouts? Or do adjustments need to be made, such as modifying side panels or accepting differences in installation height? What tips are there for using these shelves in France, and are there any common pitfalls to watch out for?

I look forward to helpful feedback and advice!

The KALLAX system has standardized dimensions worldwide. The measurements are given in centimeters, so they use the metric system, which is generally compatible with French sizing standards. However, when installing built-in furniture, it is essential to measure the space accurately; otherwise, it will not fit.

I had KALLAX in an apartment in Lyon. The dimensions fit well because IKEA uses international metric measurements. It is important to accurately measure the walls on site. Fillers or installation frames are sometimes necessary, but generally no issues.

Hello klaumberto,

I understand your concerns well, as French residential units often have dimensional peculiarities, especially in older buildings. The KALLAX system uses standardized metric dimensions (approximately 77x77 cm (30x30 inches) per cube). This means it generally fits into almost any room.

This means that the system itself is not specifically adapted for France, but it also does not use different dimensions.

A small tip: Be sure to measure your planned installation spaces carefully and note that the KALLAX depth is 39 cm (15 inches). French built-in walls or niches can sometimes be narrower.

If you want to make adjustments, these usually have to be done separately (for example, modifying the side panels). If you plan to use KALLAX as a built-in shelf, you should therefore check the dimensions very precisely.

If you like, I can help you compare your measurements against the KALLAX system to avoid any pitfalls.

Hello klaumberto,

I think it’s great that you’re considering these details in advance! I personally tried to use KALLAX in an older apartment in Paris and was initially unsure about the dimensions.

However, I ran into the problem that the installation height of the KALLAX units didn’t quite match the French standard height for built-in shelves with doors.

I had to do some minor construction work to compensate for this. The important thing is: when in doubt, it’s better to measure precisely with a tape measure and laser level ;-)

If you have any questions, I’m happy to share my experience in more detail.

I can only agree with that! Additionally, I would recommend setting up the KALLAX units temporarily in the room before making a final purchase decision, if possible. Especially in older French buildings, there are often dimensional variations where every millimeter counts.

If you are considering design modifications in addition to measurements, it might be worthwhile to have a carpenter review customized adjustments. While KALLAX itself is a rigid system, this approach allows for greater flexibility.

I wish you the best of luck with your project!
