Hello everyone, I’m looking for detailed tips and instructions on how to optimally assemble Ikea Metod kitchen cabinets with sliding doors—especially for small kitchen spaces. I’ve heard that sliding doors save a lot of space, but I want to know what to watch out for during assembly since the area is very limited. What is the best way to plan the sliding door mechanism, proper mounting, and door selection to ensure everything runs smoothly in the end? Are there any special considerations when installing or combining Metod cabinets with sliding doors that I should definitely keep in mind? I look forward to any experience reports and practical advice! Thanks in advance.

Hello frederikeg, in general, it is correct that sliding doors are very suitable for small kitchens since they do not require additional swing space. When assembling the Ikea Metod cabinets with sliding doors, I recommend the following approach:

- First, precisely plan the dimensions of the cabinets and doors, especially making sure the tracks are installed accurately.
- The sliding door systems for Metod are usually available as standalone modules or as additional components. Make sure the sliding doors are designed for your cabinet width and height.
- During installation, it is very important that the tracks are mounted exactly level and parallel to prevent the doors from catching or sticking later.
- Pay attention to the maximum weight of the doors according to the Ikea instructions to avoid overloading the mechanism.

A solid recommendation: Use a spirit level when installing the tracks and tighten all corner joints of the cabinet carcass before mounting the sliding doors and tracks. This helps avoid any tension in the structure.

If you have more detailed questions, feel free to ask.

Hello frederikeg, to be a bit more detailed, here are some tips from my experience installing Metod cabinets with sliding doors in small kitchens:

- Preparation is key: Measure the intended installation area precisely – the width, height, and depth must be exact, as sliding doors allow no room for adjustment.
- The guide system is crucial for sliding doors; for example, Ikea offers sliding door systems like the Utrusta system specifically for Metod cabinets. I recommend using original parts whenever possible, as universal solutions often have fitting issues.
- The upper tracks and the bottom guide rail should always be carefully aligned. Keep in mind that small errors add up and can affect smooth door movement.
- Note that sliding doors with glass or other materials may be heavier – this can increase the load on the running tracks.
- For small kitchens, a combination of tall wall cabinets with sliding doors and base cabinets with traditional hinged doors works well to ensure flexible use.

Sometimes it helps to install in two stages: first the cabinet carcass, then the sliding doors. This way, you can better verify that everything fits before mounting the doors.

If needed, I’m happy to explain the individual installation steps in more detail.

I completely understand that, especially in small kitchens, every bit of space for work and movement counts. I’ve installed Metod cabinets with sliding doors myself and found it challenging at first because the alignment of the rollers and tracks has to be very precise.

What helped me was staying patient and making small adjustments to the doors while the cabinets were already assembled. Sometimes the doors also react sensitively if the cabinet carcass isn’t perfectly straight.

If you still have issues with warping or limited space, just let me know—I’m happy to share tips on the best way to solve that for you!

It’s definitely doable, and once everything fits correctly, it makes everyday kitchen use much easier.

I would generally agree with this, but it should also be considered that Metod systems are primarily designed for conventional hinged doors. The integration of sliding doors is not always implemented as cleanly as it may seem at first glance.

Therefore, it is important to critically assess whether the installed sliding door system is actually durable and robust enough for the specific kitchen size. Especially in small kitchens, where space constraints often lead to slight deviations, the tracks can quickly become blocked.

Additionally, I recommend strictly adhering to the specified maximum door height and width. If any adjustments are necessary, carefully check whether the alternative remains mechanically stable.

It would be interesting to hear if anyone here has experience with alternative sliding door mounting systems that are better suited for very small kitchens.

Absolutely, I can only agree with this advice! I recently installed Metod cabinets with sliding doors for my small city apartment, and it was definitely easier to attach the doors last.

A little lifehack: especially in tight kitchens, it can be useful to fix the upper track to the ceiling—if possible—instead of just to the cabinet frame. This makes the guide more stable and the doors slide more smoothly.

I also recommend using a light silicone lubricant (check Ikea’s instructions again) if the tracks squeak a bit; this protects the mechanism and makes operation easier.

Overall, sliding doors really do save space, but the installation does require a few patient steps.
