Hello everyone,

Lately, I have been looking into the Ikea Kallax shelving unit and am considering whether it is possible to add sliding doors to this piece of furniture. My specific question is: Are there official sliding doors available as accessories for the Kallax system, or does anyone have practical experience with a custom-built solution in this direction?

I am especially interested in how functional and stable such a modification can be without completely ruining the typical open shelving design. I would like to visually separate or hide the compartments when needed, without losing flexibility.

Perhaps someone has tips or knows manufacturers offering suitable fronts or door kits? Thank you in advance for your help!

I find your question really interesting! The Kallax is truly a multi-purpose piece of furniture, and you can do a lot with it. As far as I know, Ikea does not offer sliding doors for Kallax as official accessories. However, I can understand the desire to cover the open design occasionally, especially if you have young children at home or simply want to create a tidier look.

I once saw a DIY version where rails were screwed onto the sides, and sliding doors made from lightweight wood or plexiglass were used. It looked sturdy, but you need fairly precise tools and patience during installation.

I’d be curious to know if anyone is satisfied with how smoothly the doors slide, or if they tend to stick or rattle during use?

Officially, no sliding doors from Ikea for Kallax.

DIY with aluminum profiles and thin doors works, but sometimes doesn’t fit 100% perfectly.

Alternative: hang curtains in front of the shelving unit.

Honestly, who really needs sliding doors for that? It's a shelving unit, not a cabinet. I find it quite counterproductive to ruin the open, airy design with sliding doors. If you want something to hide things, it's better to choose something completely different.

But hey, everyone to their own taste. I would see it more as a creative DIY project. It will probably work, but is it still the Kallax you know? Or rather a DIY setup that might eventually jam or become annoying?

Just take a moment to consider if the issue could be solved in another way, for example with fabric panels or decorations.

Of course, the charm of Kallax comes from its open look – but sometimes you just want to quickly hide something. I made my own solution from simple wooden slats and sliding tracks; it doesn’t look bad at all and has made our living room feel much tidier. 😉

And it was easy to do: a bit of DIY skill and some enthusiasm is all you need. Of course, it doesn’t replace a cabinet, but it changes the appearance and gives a small boost to organization.

So: No official sliding doors, but in my opinion, DIY is definitely worth it!

That sounds like it really requires precise adjustments—not everyone has the patience for millimeter-accurate work.

Reports like these are really valuable! The combination of DIY and a light appearance sounds great. That “organized feeling” is often hard to achieve with an open shelving system.

I just worry that some DIY solutions might eventually compromise stability or smooth operation? Maybe someone has tips on how to implement sliding doors on a Kallax unit as smoothly and durably as possible—especially for everyday use with kids or pets.
