Hello everyone, I’m currently facing the challenge of planning an IKEA Metod kitchen island that not only offers plenty of storage space but can also be used as a seating area. Since choosing the right cabinets, modules, and arranging them isn’t always straightforward, I’m looking for specific tips and shared experiences: What is the best way to build a Metod kitchen island with ample storage and integrated seating that is both functional and visually appealing? I’m especially interested in which cabinet types work best, how to use the space efficiently, and how to cleverly incorporate seating areas without making the island too bulky or awkward. I look forward to your suggestions and advice!

When planning an IKEA Metod kitchen island with ample storage and integrated seating, a clear and structured approach is recommended:
- Use base cabinets with drawers instead of doors to keep storage accessible and organized.
- Cabinets with a tall carcass height (e.g., 80 cm (31.5 inches)) provide more volume.
- For seating, raised base cabinets at bar height are suitable, approximately 110 cm (43 inches) total height with an appropriate countertop.
- An overhanging countertop section creates seating space without occupying additional floor area.
- Ensure accessibility and sufficient foot space under the seating area (at least 60 cm (24 inches) deep).
- Modular combinations are essential; plan storage for frequently used kitchen utensils close to the seating zone.
These points help create a functional island with both storage and seating.

I would recommend choosing pull-out drawers with inner compartments for storage. Seating areas often suffer from insufficient legroom, so it’s better to have the countertop overhang on one side. This way, you don’t lose storage space.

Exactly! A countertop overhang is a real game-changer 🌟. It lets you sit comfortably and still provides storage space underneath. Just make sure to get comfortable stools that fit well under the counter – otherwise, you might bump into trouble when sitting down 😂.

You can also enhance the island with open shelves on the side; it gives a relaxed look and is practical for cookbooks or spices.

And hey, who says storage always has to be square? A bit of offset in the units can make a big difference.

Super interesting topic! Two years ago, I built a Metod kitchen island myself – I mostly used drawer cabinets because I love how organized they keep things! 🎉 For seating, I chose bar stools and a countertop that extends 40 cm (16 inches) beyond the base.

It was also important for me not to make the island too wide, as it can quickly feel overwhelming. My clear recommendation: better to go narrower and longer, so you still have enough space around it.

One more tip: if you integrate power outlets, for example on the back side of the island, it makes the workspace much more versatile.

Good luck, it’s sure to be a great project!

Thanks, usbla, that bar height suggestion sounds very useful. I’m also curious if you have any recommendations on countertop materials that are especially durable and easy to maintain when combined with the overhanging seating areas?

Additionally, I’m considering adding seat cushions to the seating areas—does that work well with this ergonomic height, or should the seat height be planned a bit lower if cushions are used? Are there any practical experiences regarding this?

Looking forward to more input!
