afifdanHello everyone,
I have a question that’s been on my mind lately: Are there any sustainable cleaning products specifically suitable for the wood surfaces of Ikea Hemnes furniture?
I’ve had this furniture at home for some time and want to care for it in an eco-friendly way without damaging the surfaces. It’s important to me that the products are both biodegradable and as free as possible from harsh chemicals.
Does anyone know if there are such cleaning products on the market that are gentle on treated wood while containing sustainable ingredients? Or does anyone have experience with homemade solutions that work?
Looking forward to your advice and tips!

I usually clean my HEMNES furniture with just water and a splash of mild dish soap. That’s a great starting point! To make it more sustainable, there are now excellent eco-friendly dish soaps available that use plant-based oils instead of chemicals – so you can clean with a clear conscience. Adding a splash of lemon juice to the water can also be refreshing and helps with light dirt.
For factual clarification: The Ikea HEMNES surfaces are made of painted or oiled pine wood. For sustainable cleaning, a mild cleaner without solvents or harsh alcohols is recommended to avoid damaging the protective layer.
Products containing biodegradable surfactants based on coconut or sugar-based surfactants are suggested. Simple home remedies like vinegar water are often not ideal due to their acidity, which can damage the paint or oil layer over time.
Tip: After cleaning with a damp cloth, always dry the surface thoroughly to prevent water spots and avoid damage to the wood.

With HEMNES, I have had good experiences using pH-neutral wood cleaners.

Therefore, I would recommend paying attention not only to the ingredient label but also to independent certifications. These at least ensure a minimum standard of sustainable production and environmental friendliness.
Furthermore, I wonder: Is using such cleaners truly beneficial for the durability of the furniture, or is the natural wear on HEMNES furniture already more significant than the influence of cleaning products?
