Hello everyone,
I have a question that’s been on my mind lately: Are there any sustainable cleaning products specifically suitable for the wood surfaces of Ikea Hemnes furniture?
I’ve had this furniture at home for some time and want to care for it in an eco-friendly way without damaging the surfaces. It’s important to me that the products are both biodegradable and as free as possible from harsh chemicals.
Does anyone know if there are such cleaning products on the market that are gentle on treated wood while containing sustainable ingredients? Or does anyone have experience with homemade solutions that work?
Looking forward to your advice and tips!

Is using such cleaners truly beneficial for the longevity of the furniture, or is natural wear and tear on HEMNES pieces stronger anyway than the impact of cleaning agents?Good question, Genevieve. For me, clarity about the consequences of product choices is central, especially because I care about sustainability. If natural aging predominates anyway, then I don't want to bring unnecessary substances into the home.
Are there solid experiences or studies that demonstrate links between sustainable cleaning and the durability of lacquered or oiled wood surfaces? I think it’s important to rule out long-term damage caused by improper cleaning.
From my experience: Natural wear is actually more noticeable on Hemnes than any damage caused by mild cleaners. Regular care with eco-friendly products – such as olive oil soap or special wood cleaners for oiled surfaces – keeps the wood in good condition without causing harm.
In the long term, excessive moisture or harsh chemicals usually cause more damage.
My advice: Clean only when there is visible dirt, use sparingly, and always thoroughly dry afterwards.

Are there any reliable experiences or studies that demonstrate a connection between sustainable cleaning and the durability of painted or oiled wood surfaces? This is an interesting question. I have not found any scientific studies, but my experience after years of use shows that gentle cleaning with mild substances helps maintain the surfaces.
Additionally, I have heard from professionals that proper cleaning and occasional re-oiling can indeed extend the lifespan of furniture. Sustainable products can therefore be supportive if used correctly.
