The noise usually occurs when opening and closing, which gets really annoying over time. In my opinion, the doors are properly aligned, and the hinges are correctly installed, at least as far as I can tell. My question is: how can I prevent the Ikea Platsa doors from squeaking? Are there specific methods, materials, or tips to permanently eliminate this unpleasant noise? I would appreciate detailed suggestions and experiences.
Hello metatiana, I am familiar with the problem of squeaking Platsa doors, as it often results from slight friction or insufficient lubrication of the hinges. First, you should check whether the hinge screws are tight, since loose fittings can increase noise. Next, I recommend treating the hinges with an appropriate lubricant; silicone sprays or special furniture oils work well to keep the plastic and metal smooth. Be careful to apply the lubricant sparingly to avoid stains. In some cases, the door is slightly misaligned, causing it to rub against the frame or adjacent door parts when opened – this can be corrected by adjusting the hinges using the adjustment screws. If the plastic bushings in the hinges are damaged, replacing them is worthwhile, as they have the greatest impact on the noise. In general, regular maintenance helps prevent a lot of trouble.
I would like to briefly elaborate on possible causes and solutions. The Ikea Platsa hinges have a typical design where plastic and metal parts work together. The squeaking often occurs when the plastic bearings are dry or dirty, or when the door lightly hits seals or the cabinet frame. I recommend the following steps:
- First, remove the door to access the hinges easily and without force.
- Then, treat the plastic bushings and metal parts with graphite powder or a lubricant specifically suitable for plastic. Silicone spray is recommended because it does not become sticky, unlike oil.
- Check if the door moves freely within the mechanisms without friction; adjustments may be necessary by loosening or tightening the screws on the side, height, or depth level.
- Ensure the frame alignment is precise, as even a slight offset of a few millimeters (inches) can cause squeaking, especially with magnetic catches or rubber seals.
It might also be worth replacing the hinge rubber parts if present, or fully replacing the hinges if there is wear. Do you have specific information on the cabinet’s environment (humidity, floor conditions) or how old the doors are? Sometimes environmental factors play a role.

Especially with walls that are uneven or with differences in floor level, stress-related pressure points can occur, which cause noises. Besides lubrication, checking the alignment of the door within the cabinet often helps.
- A simple test is to gently move the door by hand in different directions. If you feel resistance anywhere, that is likely the cause.
- You should also apply lubricant to the plastic gliders at the bottom end of the door, as these can dry out quickly.
- For a long-term solution, you can also try using a thin strip of PTFE tape at friction points to reduce contact.
Have you also checked if the doors are rubbing against the frame at the top or on the sides?

That’s good to know, because I was considering using WD-40 or other oils but was unsure about staining the white wood.
The cabinet is placed on a fairly level laminate floor in a well-heated room, so that shouldn’t have an impact. The Platsa doors were installed no more than 2 weeks ago.
That’s easy to check, and so far I haven’t noticed anything unusual, but I will take a closer look.
I plan to test silicone spray for the hinges and will make sure to remove the door to reach all the spots. If that doesn’t help, I might consider replacing the hinges. Are there any experiences with how often the hinges on Platsa actually fail?

Alberto5129 Oct 2022 11:18I can understand how annoying the squeaking is – I had the same issue with another IKEA model. In my case, it was usually caused by dust that had settled on the hinges over time. When opening the door, the dust would compress and create noise. What helped was removing the hinges and cleaning them thoroughly before lubricating and reinstalling them.
That’s a good plan! Silicone spray worked best for me, and it’s also quick to apply.
If you’re unsure, it’s perfectly fine to spend a bit more time adjusting at first – the doors really need to move freely and evenly. I also found it helpful to gently move the furniture piece slightly while adjusting, so nothing gets stuck. Good luck!
