ᐅ How do I properly adjust the height of Billy bookshelf shelves?

Hello everyone,

I recently bought a Billy shelf from IKEA and am now facing the challenge of adjusting the shelf heights correctly. Since I want to achieve maximum stability and optimal use of the storage space, I am especially interested in how to adjust the individual shelves so that they are perfectly level and securely held. What steps should I follow, particularly regarding the positioning of the shelves on the holes in the side panels? It would also be helpful to know if there are any tips for compensating for possible inaccuracies in the hole spacing. I want to avoid the shelves wobbling or slipping down later due to excessive load.

I look forward to detailed instructions or proven methods for precise adjustment of the Billy shelves.

Thank you in advance!

If necessary, use small washers if the holes are not precisely drilled.

This is an important tip that I would like to expand on.

Billy shelves are great, but minor manufacturing tolerances in the drilling are not uncommon. To secure the shelf supports optimally, I recommend the following procedure:

1. Check all the holes along the side panels for dimensional accuracy. Minor deviations can be compensated for with thin washers or felt pads—simply place these on the shelf support before inserting it into the hole.

2. The shelf supports are made of plastic, so avoid applying too much pressure to prevent the material from cracking at the insertion point.

3. Use a digital level or spirit level with high accuracy. Sometimes even a slight misalignment of a single shelf support can cause the shelf to be uneven, unstable, or sag over time.

4. If you plan to install shelves with a higher load capacity, there are reinforced versions available, or you can add additional metal angle brackets that provide significantly better load distribution.

I would also like to know what load you are planning to carry. How much weight should the shelves support?

Thanks for this follow-up question – very helpful! I mainly plan to store books and binders on the shelves, so each shelf will likely hold around 15-20 kg (33-44 lbs). The shelves are the original Billy shelves, with no additional reinforcements so far.

I will also try your suggestion with the washers in case the plastic supports don’t hold firmly or there is too much play in the holes.

So far, the only issue I had was that some shelves slightly wobbled when placed – could this possibly be due to misaligned supports?

Looking forward to further advice!

Yes, the wobbling of a shelf board is very often due to uneven heights or insufficiently secure seating of the supports. Plastic supports can easily slip when under load due to inaccurate hole positioning or material fatigue.

For your load of 15-20 kg per shelf (33-44 lbs), the standard solution from IKEA is generally sufficient, but precise fitting of all shelf supports is essential.

If the wobbling occurs despite correct positioning, also check the levelness of the shelf board and the sides of the shelving unit. Adjusting the support lengths using accessories (felt pads, small plastic washers) can specifically compensate for minor unevenness.

That’s a great tip. Here’s mine: place the floor panel lightly on the joists and gently move it back and forth. This way, you can quickly identify which dowel isn’t seated firmly.

Then just pull it out and reinsert it. Sometimes it helps to twist it slightly while inserting to get a better grip.

I’ve also encountered cases where the joists didn’t fit perfectly into certain holes. Patience is key, but in the end, it will be solid :-)

And hey, enjoy clearing out your piles of books on the Billy!

Hey farboubaca!

Just a small, casual tip from me: once you’ve set the height and the shelves are properly and securely in place, it’s best to note the number and positions of the holes you used. This way, it will be easier to adjust later if you want to rearrange the shelf or organize things differently.

Also, if you want to get a bit creative, you can mark the supports with colorful tape – it makes adjusting even more fun and almost looks like a little DIY artwork 😉

Good luck with your Billy shelf adventure! 🙂

The entire discussion here revolves around the correct adjustment of shelf heights using plastic shelf supports. It is interesting how almost everyone only addresses this issue at a very superficial level.

From my perspective, these plastic supports actually represent a technical weak point. Anyone seriously planning for higher loads or significantly longer durability should consider alternative solutions. Metal adjustable rails with metal supports, for example, would be an option.

The standard holes in the Billy shelf unit are too large for precise fixation of the plastic supports, which causes play and wobbling. Occasionally compensating with washers is a makeshift solution that does not solve the problem sustainably.

Conclusion: The official method only works partially; anyone seeking precision and longevity needs to take a deeper approach and question the standards.
