Hello everyone,

Some time ago, I assembled several IKEA Besta drawers and noticed that opening and closing them is not very smooth and can sometimes be quite noisy. This bothers me a lot, especially when I’m looking for something in the drawers at night.

I’m interested in learning about any tips, tricks, or improvements you can recommend to make IKEA Besta drawers operate more smoothly and, above all, more quietly. I’m curious about simple adjustments as well as minor modifications or alternative materials that could help improve the running quality.

Any advice on experiences with installing damping systems, different drawer slides, or lubricants is also welcome.

Thanks in advance for your tips!

My experience is that careful installation is key. If the tracks are installed crooked, nothing runs smoothly. Silicone spray can help, but it is no substitute for proper installation.

Thanks so far for the helpful tips!

@FAZAR: You mentioned that the original rail system often isn’t of the best quality and that soft-close systems could be an option. Could you possibly recommend some models or manufacturers that are well compatible with IKEA Besta?

Also, is installation or modification very complicated, or can an experienced DIYer handle it without any problems?

My main goal is, besides quieter operation, to find a long-term low-maintenance solution.

The most well-known and reliable manufacturers of high-quality drawer systems with soft-close technology are Blum (especially the TANDEM and MOVENTO rails) and Hettich with their Quadro system. These offer full extension options and excellent dampers.

Basically, these modifications are doable, but they require precise marking and measuring, since the mounting points for the new rails differ from IKEA’s. Especially with BESTA, the frame is made of relatively thin particleboard, so you may need to use spacers or reinforcements to securely fasten the screws.

Additionally, cutouts or recesses for integrated dampers must be taken into account. Anyone who works patiently and accurately can complete the conversion in a few hours per drawer.

If you like, I can provide you with a step-by-step guide including tips on drilling and installation.

I lubricated the plastic rollers of my BESTA drawers with thin silicone oil. This noticeably reduced the noise while running and now they operate very smoothly.

Another effective strategy to make drawers run more quietly is to use self-adhesive foam or felt tape at contact points, especially at the rear impact point of the drawer inside the cabinet. This absorbs vibrations and prevents rattling.

Noise usually occurs due to hard-on-hard contact and loose parts. Therefore, a combination of perfect alignment, lubrication, and cushioning is essential.

If you want, I can write you a step-by-step guide with tips on drilling and mounting.

That would be really helpful, truly! Your tips sound very professional; I didn’t realize there were so many details to consider. I would definitely appreciate a detailed guide!

My drawers are much quieter now, but a soft-close feature would definitely be the next step 🙂
