ᐅ What lighting options are suitable for effectively illuminating an Ikea Besta unit used as a cabinet?

gelisHello everyone, I am planning to illuminate my Ikea Besta cabinet as optimally as possible and am looking for suitable lighting options. My goal is to achieve even lighting inside, ideally with a combination of energy-efficient, easily dimmable lights that can be mounted as discreetly as possible. I mainly have two questions: which light sources and mounting methods work best for the Besta system? And which color temperatures are recommended to display the contents’ colors neutrally and pleasantly? I would greatly appreciate any practical experience, specific product recommendations, or clever DIY solutions!
First, it is important to consider the conditions of the built-in cabinet: The modular design and often white interior surfaces promote diffuse lighting. LED profiles with an opal diffuser provide even light distribution and prevent harsh shadows. Connected power supplies with dimmer function allow for stepless adjustment of the light intensity. Here are some points to consider when choosing:
- LED strips with at least 80 CRI for good color rendering
- Color temperature between 2700K and 3500K for warm white to neutral light
- Mounting using included clips or self-adhesive backing
- Optional motion sensors so the light only turns on when needed
Another consideration regards the power supply: There are versions with low voltage (12V) or with 230V LED modules. For indoor use, low voltage solutions are usually safer and easier to integrate.
A small tip: Plan cable routing before installation to avoid disrupting the appearance.

LED profiles with an opal diffuser provide even light distribution and prevent harsh shadows. Thanks, that’s a valuable tip. I’m wondering whether it’s better to buy ready-made profiles or if simple LED strips with an acrylic cover are sufficient? I want to mount them as residue-free as possible, since I might want to repurpose the cabinet later.

Warm white light around 3000 Kelvin feels comfortable and glare-free. Would you say that 3000K is also adequate for color rendering when displaying books or decorations? Or is a more neutral light better?
I would also like to know if anyone has experience with switchable or even app-controlled LEDs in Besta.

I wonder whether it's better to buy prefabricated profiles or if simple LED strips with an acrylic cover are sufficient? From a technical perspective, both options are feasible. Prefabricated aluminum profiles offer better heat dissipation, which extends the lifespan of the LEDs. They also tend to look more professional and simplify installation thanks to clips or locking mechanisms. An acrylic cover can diffuse light well but needs to be precisely prepared to fit.

Would you say that 3000K is sufficient for color rendering when displaying books or decorations? 3000K is a good compromise between warm and neutral tones. If very accurate color rendering is required, I would recommend 3500K with a CRI above 90, as it produces a more neutral, clearer light without appearing too cool.
Regarding app control: many manufacturers now offer smart LED strips controllable via Wi-Fi. These allow convenient adjustment of color temperature and brightness but tend to be more expensive and usually require an external bridge or app. For most purposes, a simple dimmer is sufficient.
