Hello everyone,

I have an IKEA Malm bed frame (140x200 cm (55x79 inches)) and I’m starting to worry about how stable and secure the frame really is. After some time, I feel like the bed wobbles slightly, especially when moving around or sitting on it.

My main question is: How can a Malm bed frame be better secured to prevent wobbling and increase overall stability? I’m particularly interested in whether there are effective additional measures that can be done easily without special tools, or if there are specific reinforcements or hardware recommended.

I’m looking for tips that improve both durability and safety – does anyone have experience with this or has tried it before?

Thanks in advance!

Hello Wesleymau,

well-formulated question! The Malm bed frame has a very attractive design, but stability is a common issue for many users.

To improve it, I generally recommend the following points:

1. Check if all connections (screws, dowels) are properly tightened – retightening often significantly increases stability.

2. Adding a central support beam for the slatted bed base can reduce sagging.

3. Metal brackets at the inner corners provide additional reinforcement without significantly altering the construction.

4. Rubber or felt pads under the feet can prevent the bed from slipping on smooth floors, thereby reducing wobbling.

Professional reinforcement using additional metal profiles is possible but usually requires some DIY skills.

Hey,

I basically agree with Nubar and would like to add something:

For my Malm bed, I installed metal brackets and screwed on self-adhesive felt pads under the legs – this noticeably reduced the wobbling. 🙂

You might also consider fixing the bed to the wall if it’s placed close to it. That way, it won’t shift and will feel more stable.

Sometimes a firm slatted frame with extra cross supports also helps – you can find these inexpensively as an add-on at Ikea.

Hello Wesleymau,

I’m familiar with this problem too – a wobbly bed can really be annoying and feel unsafe.

Personally, I once tried securing the connection points with a special mounting adhesive paste. This improved stability and prevented any cracking. However, you wouldn’t be able to disassemble the bed as easily afterward.

Sometimes, it’s also a matter of the floor: on uneven or slippery floors, the bed’s core stability noticeably decreases. For me, a solution was placing an underlay or rug beneath the bed. This reduces vibrations and prevents individual legs from moving differently.

I would say you should regularly check and tighten the screws at the connection points.

If that doesn’t help, metal brackets in the corners are the simplest solution. They’re available at any hardware store, quick to install, and very effective.

That is of course fundamental, but I would also question whether the design of the Malm frame is inherently limited in terms of load capacity. The thin wooden parts tend to reach their limits quickly.

Reinforcing the frame with metal profiles or additional wooden beams underneath could provide a long-term solution, but this requires precise measurements and some craftsmanship skills.

Has anyone here ever installed such metal or wood reinforcements permanently and can share long-term experience?
