I have assembled my Ikea Metod drawers several times by now, but I noticed that they sometimes operate quite stiffly. The rails were installed exactly according to the instructions, yet the drawers do not slide smoothly, and often I have to apply considerable force to open or close them. Can anyone explain what might cause this? Could it be installation errors, material defects, or is there something that can be done to improve the sliding action? I have already checked the rails for dirt and made adjustments, but so far without success. Thanks for any tips!

Does anyone know how much adjustment tolerance the Metod rails have?I think it’s completely understandable that you’re concerned about fine-tuning. What helped me was to completely remove the drawers from the runners, loosen all the screws, and then carefully realign the rails. After that, gently tighten everything again—not too tight—which can make the whole mechanism smoother.
Sometimes the sliding surface can stick slightly; in that case, a light lubricant helps. But be careful to use only specialized plastic-safe lubricants, not oil or grease, since those attract dust.
I’m keeping my fingers crossed that this improves things because sticky drawers can be really frustrating.
Hey, great topic! I just want to emphasize again how crucial precise installation is! I had the exact same problem with stiff Metod drawers and ended up completely disassembling and finely adjusting the rails from scratch.
What also helped me a lot:
- Remove the drawers and clean the rails
- Check small plastic parts on the rails for damage or misalignment
- After reinstalling, test without any load at first
I even slightly loosened the screws so the rails wouldn’t be clamped too tightly.
This significantly improved the smoothness, and now I really enjoy the quiet glide! So: keep at it, it’s worth it! 🙂

Metod and stiff drawers? The first issue is usually that they aren’t installed perfectly – it’s like with the perfect dance partner; if one is even slightly off rhythm, the whole thing doesn’t run smoothly 😊
Sometimes it helps to completely remove the drawer and treat the sliding rails with a suitable lubricant. However, be careful not to use lubricants that attract dust.
Also: Check the correct positioning of the guide rails, as a small bracket can sometimes slip out slightly and cause friction. A clear tip from me: take your time and patiently check the fit thoroughly.
It pays off! Best of luck with your Metods!

Metod drawers can become difficult to operate for the following reasons:
- Rails are not parallel or precisely installed
- Screws tightened too much, causing deformation
- Load exceeds the limit
- Foreign objects in the guide
Careful adjustment and loosening the screws often helps. Please do not use oils, as they attract dust.
I recommend checking with precise measuring tools, if possible.
