Hello everyone, I have a question that has been on my mind for a while: How can I easily retrofit Ikea Metod drawers? In other words, are there practical and time-saving solutions to add extra drawers to existing Metod cabinet systems without having to completely dismantle or extensively modify the whole setup? Ideally, I am looking for a method that is doable even for less experienced DIYers without the need for special tools. Perhaps someone knows some tips for proper preparation, suitable accessories, or helpful installation advice. I look forward to your experiences and recommendations!

Metod drawers with the original MAXIMERA runners easily support 15-20 kg (33-44 lbs).

That sounds very promising. For better understanding: Is it possible to retrofit existing Metod cabinet systems without dismantling individual modules in terms of accessibility? Or is it advisable to at least partially disassemble the entire cabinet when adding new drawers?

It is usually not necessary to disassemble the entire cabinet. To retrofit drawers, you can typically create enough space to install the sliding rails by opening the existing doors and removing any shelves already in place. For taller cabinet systems, partially removing the upper shelves may help, but it is not absolutely required. It is important to carefully take all measurements before retrofitting and then install the rails accordingly.

I know the problem when you feel like you have to take everything apart but still don’t want to do major renovations. That’s why my advice is: patience is key when measuring and aligning. If you take small steps and use the right tools – ideally a screwdriver with a good grip and a spirit level – you can easily and calmly make adjustments without frustration. Also, it’s great that Ikea designed the Metod system to be modular. That really provides confidence and becomes enjoyable over time.

With a simple cordless drill and some patience, you can easily complete the retrofit. Important: Always screw the rails to the cabinet first, then assemble and adjust the drawer. Otherwise, you might run into issues with the fit.

Thanks for the tip, that seems to be an important point for easy retrofitting. In summary, I would say that
- using runners compatible with Metod (e.g., Maximera)
- carefully measuring the cabinet depth and height
- mounting the runners directly on the cabinet before sliding in the drawer
- removing shelves if necessary for better accessibility
- using felt or rubber pads for cushioning

are the key aspects. If anyone has any insider tips, please share!
